Title: Census Mystery. COMPLETED
Post by: Pentangle67 on Friday 05 August 11 19:31 BST (UK)
Can someone help me with a bit if a mystery?  :-\   I have "lost" a family on the 1891 and 1901 censuses. The head and spouse married in 1887 and over the course of 2 decades had 3 children (1890, 1897 & 1899).They first appear on the 1911 census. I know through family questioning that they didn't do anything like leave the country. I'm guessing that one possible reason is name misspelling (although to misspell on 2 censuses seems a bit odd and I have had no trouble finding the name/ancestors on the other censuses). I have tried to get a surname index but don't know the best place to look.  Is it possible that if the head of the family was away at sea, the census wouldn't have been filled in or would the spouse be allowed to do this??... I ask as he was in the fishing industry. I'm really baffled as to why I cannot find any trace of them as I have had no probs getting a marriage certificate and seeing evidence of birth registrations.

Lovely, thank you.  This is as stated on the 1911 census ..  Henry Arthur Sunman, head, age 43   Mary Sunman, Wife, age 43 (listed birth years for both 1968). They were married in 1887. Henry Arthur Sunman, son, age 21, born 1890, Mary Sunman, daughter, age 14, born 1897. Norah Sunman, daughter, age 12, born 1899.  Please let me know if any more additional info is needed, ie districts, birth places, etc

I just looked at the 1901 census, and I cannot see them  ???    I'm sorry, I am a bit of a novice and I only have access to one family history site. I can see Sinman listed but not ones that would be Henry/Mary & family.  The district could be either Great Yarmouth, Lincolnshire or Sculcoates(a Hull one).

Well if you use Ancestry they are under SUNMAN in 1901 on that reference I gave!
Henry 1867 Mary 1868 Henry 1890 Mary K 1897 Nora 1898
The same in 1891 on Ancestry they are SUNMAN Henry 1868 Mary 1868 Henry 1889

Got that one!! Great! And it definitely is them as the birth places match up so thank you so much. Heck, that is a big difference in the name.  I will check the 1901 again.

You can always use a * instead of a letter in the name, including the first letter.    In case of mis-spellings etc.

In ancestry in 1891 they are Sunman name.

I use Findmypast, and I have double checked and they are definitely not on their transcript of the 1901 census. So, I guess I will have to pop over to Ancestry to get a print out then. Annoying, as I have credits on findmypast only.

Search for SIMMAN in Hull  ;)

There is a reference search on findmypast - simply click on it and use the numbers keyboard has given you.

They are definitely there in 1901.

The handwriting on the 1901 is terrible - it could be transcribed in quite a few different ways  ::)
