Hi - Looking for any info on James and Anne Stocks, I don't know their dates or places of birth, or Anne's maiden name, but they had 12 Children all born in Starcross Devon, they are as follows:
THE 12 STOCKS FAMILY SIBLINGS (STARCROSS, DEVON)
1809: Ann Stocks (d. 29 Aug. 1873)
1811: Henry " (d. 30 Sept 1881 at Dawlish. Buried at Kenton)
1813: Louisa " (d. 25 Aug. 1883 at Croydon)
1814: James " (d. 1834 at Starcross)
1816: John "
1818: Thomas " (d. 1818, in London)
1819: Frederick " (d. Bombay, India, “about 1880”)
1821: Sidney " (spelt with an "i") (d. 1886, in London)
1822: William "
1824: Emily Elizabeth Stocks (direct ancestor, married a Bolt.*
1826: Charles (died at 2 days)
1829: Frances Jonna [sic.] Stocks (burnt to death at Starcross, 13 January 1853)
* Emily married William Thomas Cosse Maurice BOLT, b. 18 June 1822. Died 13 September 1888 at 4:30 pm.
* No dates of death for John and William are given and it is possible that they were still alive when the Stocks entries were first made in the Bolt family Birthday Book.

Hi hope I can help, via a search on Google Maps I see Starcross is very close to Powderham Castle/Powderham, so possibly this could be the marriage of James to Ann:-
James STOCKES to Ann Bustard 2nd May 1807 Powderham, Devon.

PS in fact it is 2.4 miles away!

This appears to be Ann * daughter Frances in the 1851 census [see below], there
are quite a few other Stocks listed for Devonshire.
Mike.
Ann STOCKS Head W 60 Grocer born Kenton
Frances Jeanne STOCKS Daur U 21 Assistant Grocer Daur born Starcross
Thos. ROSSITER Vist W 65 M Shoemaker born Kenton

The children appear to have been baptised at Kenton, and these baptisms can be checked on the IGI - batch number C051251.
A James STOAKES was baptised at Powderham 20 Jul 1777 son of Thos. & Johannah.
Ann BUSTARD was baptised at Powderham 27 Apr 1783 dau of Chor (? - possibly Charles) & Ann.

Hi again Therese since your post on Suffolk board I have been looking for you & I have found this:
As noted by Mike - 1851C Ann STOCKS wd born c1791, Kenton, living in Kenton with daughter Frances & visitor Thomas Rossiter c1786 also born Kenton.
Ann ROSSITER married James STOKES 5 Jan 1809 Kenton - source Devon Family History Society :)

Also 2 burials that look like they could tie in:
James STOCKS age 19 buried 25 Nov 1833 Starcross - so born c1814 (source Devon FHS). You have a James born c1814 - d 1834.
James STOCKS age 56 buried 4 Sep 1833 Starcross (source Devon FHS) - so born c1777, which would tie in with the James STOAKES found earlier by DOB7 - bpt 20 Jul 1777 Powderham. Parents Thos & Johannah STOAKES. As your Ann seems to have been on her own in 1841 it seems likely that James died prior to that so possibly in the time frame 1829-1841.

Hi guys,
this is great, the Ann Rossiter must certainly be mine, the fact that she's living with a thomas rossiter in the 51 census (must be her brother) and also one of the 12 children - Emily Elisabeth Stocks married a Bolt and named her daughter Annie Rossiter Bolt...
So it's nice to have a maiden name - thanks everyone!
The couple James Stockes and Ann Bustard are not related.
So i'm not sure about that last buried info you posted, the 19 yr old James, most certainly sounds like the son, But i don't know if the older one is the father or not, if he is the same one that married Ann Bustard then he can't be...

Hi Therese
Ref my reply to your original post 1 Aug on Suffolk Board - James c 1784 & Ann (nee Bustard) seem to have been alive & kicking in 1841/1851 living in Exminster so it is unlikely that the James STOCKS buried Starcross 1833 age 56 so c1777 would be him although it does look as though he would have been somewhat older than Ann.

Thanks Keziah,
so it could quite possibly be him then, the age difference isn't that uncomon i imagine...
my grandparents were 15 yrs apart.

Well given that James & Anne bpt one of their children Johanna Frances STOKES on 25 Feb 1829 Starcross I would there are at least two coincidences that warrant investigation:
Thomas STOAKES & Johannah bpt one James STOKES on 20 Jul 1777
Thomas STOAKES & Johannah also bpt a Frances Charlotte Joanna 18 Jul 1779 Powderham
They also bpt a William in 1775 - names of James & Anne's children seem to have a lot of similarities to Thomas & Johannah's children?
