Title: CRAIGEN - Scotland to Australia 1890
Post by: anabanana on Wednesday 03 August 11 22:03 BST (UK)
Hello  :)

I'm on the hunt for information on a branch of the family called Craigen.  The family have been nigh on impossible to track down in Scotland after 1891.  And one of the only leads I have is that one of the son's - William Alexander Craigen flitted to Australia in 1890.  I have an image of a passenger record for a boat sailing May 1890 - and on it is W A Craigen.

Searching on ancestry showed a William Alxander Craigen residing in Victoria about 45 years later, but couldnt access any information (guess i'm not paying them enough £ already!).

Would really appreciate if anyone could shed some light.

JAMES CRAIGEN (B 1847 ABERDEEN) M JANE ROBERTSON (B 1847 ABERDEEN) 1867
Children:
1. JEAN/JANE CRAIGEN B 1868 ABERDEEN
2. WM ALEXR CRAIGEN B 1870 ABERDEEN
3. JAMES CRAIGEN B 1872 ABERDEEN
4. JOHN CRAIGEN B 1875 (looks like this one stayed in scotland)ABERDEEN
5. GEORGE CRAIGEN B 1877 ABERDEEN
(all of the above births took place in Glass, Aberdeenshire)
6. HENRY CRAIGEN B 1879 BANFFSHIRE D 1937 ABERDEEN

Kind regards

A

Check the 1911 Census on Scotlands People - most of them seem to be there in Aberdeen.

The image of the MORAYSHIRE arriving Sydney shows a W A CRAIGEN i listed as crew.  It is written across the manifest - no passengers.

Cheers

ANNA

Anna,
By this I assume you mean the Electoral Roll entry in 1949 for WILLIAM ALEXANDER CRAIGEN (Darebin)

A closer look at this seems to show an error.
The Surname appears to be CRAIG, nor CRAIGEN on the original.

Others may be able to assist with careful scrutiny.

Hi Anabanana

Are you sure your William Alexander Craigen didn't come to Australia until 1890?
When was he born?  Would there have been other Craigen family here?

Craigen is not a very common name here in Oz.

My grandfather's sister Caroline Wilson married a William Craigen on 23 Feb 1877 in Molong, NSW.
They had children William C. 1877, Robert W. 1879, Caroline 1881, Alice 1883, Johanna 1885, William J. 1887, John 1889, Ellen 1891, Grace 1894, Mary 1897. William C. was born at Molong and the rest of them at Wellington NSW
William (the father) would have been born c1832 and he died 1900 at Wellington NSW.

Is Craigen a common name in Scotland?  Not sure where my William came from - I have England but not sure this is correct.

It appears it is only the crew member with the same initials and surname that has sparked the interest in Australia.  There are a couple of later records of W A CRAIGEN as crew on ships arriving Aus.

Sue you are correct.  There is no William Alexander CRAIGEN on the image only William Alexander CRAIG with a Thelma Olive CRAIG enrolled to vote from the same address.

1954
CRAIG Thelma Olive  31 Erin Street, Preston  HD
CRAIG William Alexander  31 Erin Street, Preston  Brewery employee

He is on earlier rolls with Hannah Patricia CRAIG  HD at the same addess.

Marriage
CRAIG William Alex
BARRY Patricia Hannah
1913  Reg#10837

There were a family of CRAIGEN's who lived about an hour from my area and the father William died in Mildura in 1977 however the ages are incorrect as well as the parents' names.

Cheers
Cando

Died in Merbien 1977 just outside Mildura.

Looks like ANNA's chap is not to be seen in Vic after all.

Oh dear, so he didnt end up in Oz then?  ???

Annette7 I cannot find any of the family in the 1911 census except Henry. I'd be interested to know where you found them?

John married in 1909 to a lady called Anna Brebner. But couldnt find them on the 1911.  I will try a soundex on the surname...

Anna,
I said "not..... seen in VIC"

The outcome of your search to date is that the Shipping entry you spotted was a crewman of same initials and surname and there are none by the name you are seeking evident in VICTORIA.

The search is for a William Alexander CRAIGEN born 1870 Aberdeen son of James CRAIGEN and Jane ROBERTSTON.

Given Cando's mention of Leslie, Aberdeenshire, this obit to a James CRAIGEN in 1925 might be relevant.

MR. J. CRAIGEN.
The death occurred on Sunday night of Mr. James Craigen, builder and contractor,
of The Avenue, Ashfield. He was born in the parish of Leslie, Aberdeenshire, and after

member of the Builders' and Contractors' Association.
For 40 years he was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, being associated with the
Richmond and Kew congregations. Two years ago he carne to Ashfield.
His only surviving son Is the Rev. J. A. Craigen, of The Rock, the other son being

Ros I had found that notice and was in the middle of following the names of James' parents on the census.

Quote
1925 reg 783/1925 CRAIGEN James  father James, mother Catherine at Ashfield

James was buried at Brighton Cemetery, Vic and their records are not online so can't find his age.

It is possible that James CRAIGEN who died in Sydney is a brother to Wm's father Wm born c1844. The 1851 census has a Wm born Leslie, Aberdeen aged 7 with parents James and Catherine Milne.  On the 1861 there is a son James aged 7 years but Wm is not with the family.  Bit rushed so unable to type up the census info.

The James Craigen mentioned by Ros and Cando above was buried in Brighton Cemetery on Jan 26 1925 age 71.  Also in the same grave are Catherine Robena Craigen age 53 of South Yarra (buried 18 Feb 1946) and Mary Maud O'Brien age 78 of Canterbury (buried 2 May 1973), I would assume these are the daughters mentioned in the obituary.

Hello - I am doing some research from Scotland with an Australian lady who has a picture of a man - in an envelope along with other family photos - the printed bit says J Craigen and then Aberdeen.

In this family history there is an Alexander Craigen Birth ABT. 1843 • Drainie, Morayshire whose parents were John Craigend and Jean Proctor - he had siblings James, Jean, John, Helen, Ann and Margaret

Had hoped there might be a connection but now I think that J Craigen was the photographer as the reverse is also copied and it says J Craigen Photographer 16 George St Aberdeen

Sorry to mislead you
