I have found my great-great grandfather John Caffrey listed on the 1881 census, along with his wife and 6 children. He is listed on the 1861 census as being unmarried and boarding with a family. However, after extensive searching, I cannot find a marriage entry listed or any birth listings for any of the 6 children. I'm particularly frustrated with not finding the marriage entry as it has made my research come to a halt along this line of the family. Can anyone tell me why I can't find any record of the marriage (or the births)?
Thanks :)

hi,,,we need more info....what census? or how old is he,,,when and where was he born? ;)
-
how about Ann Waters to John Caffry 1868 Sunderland ? ;)

John Caffrey is on the 1861 census aged 20, living in Sunderland as a boarder. On the 1881 census, he is 40, now married to Ann and still living in Sunderland. He was born in Ireland (nothing more specific I'm afraid). I did once find a marriage entry for a John CAFFRY, but when I received the certificate it was obvious it wasn't the right one. He is not listed on the 1871 census, he died in 1882 ( I have his death certificate).

was the certificate you ordered the same one i posted? Ann waters was born in Sunderland in the right year?

Hi,
The children were down on the 1881 as born Leadgate, Durham. Leadgate is a small village near Consett and would come under Lanchester reg district, although it moved around a bit!
On Freebmd there are various births in Lanchester reg district
Possiblly
Catherine Caffray ond 1880
Ellen Caffery 1876
Owen Caffray 1878
You would need certificates to make sure of parents. Try different spellings, there may be more :)

Hi
There are a couple of trees on Ancestry thatbsay John Caffrey married Ann Brady , although this should nt be read as being correct, interestingly if you look on www.familysearch.org there is the following, not sure , perhaps a Catholic thing?
Baptisms Pontop, Durham
Helena Caffery 1876
Elizabetha " 1875
Franciscus " 1873
Margarita " 1872
Maria " 1870
All with parents Joannis Caffery and Annae Brady Caffery
Also a Jacobus Caffery 1864

No worries Cathy :-* In fact, after some more researching this evening, I think I have found John on the 1851 census! I looked on the Durham Records online and found a John CAFFREA, born in the right year, along with other members of his family, all born in Ireland. He doesn't appear on any other records in subsequent years. This made me wonder if the family had help in filling in their census form, ie due to high volume of illiteracy and the person who was filling in their form misspelt Caffrey??? Did this ever happen?? I am fairly new to family research (4 years on and off) so don't really know all the ins and outs.
-
The census sheets that we see are the summary ones that the enumerator completed ,so the possibilty for spelling mistakes etc is even greater than you first think.
As you say if they were illiterate then a neighbour may have helped with their household form and by the time the enumerator copied it to his records anyhting could have happened.
So be open to all sorts of different spellings.People who could read and write would also spell a name the way they thought it should be spelt. Those who couldn't read it wouldn't know if it had been spelt correctly or not.
Happens today too ;D something as simple as my name gets spelt both Carole and Carol....depends if you know someone who spells it with or without an E
Carol ;D

Yes, this was the one I ordered :)
Why was it "obviously the wrong one" ?
if you dont know his wifes maiden name,,,and you dont have the childrens birth certs,,,what did you have to compare the result on the certificate with ? ;)

FreeBMD marriage John Caffray Dec 1/4 1863 Sunderland vol 10a page 594. On same page Ann Brady
When looking for the children's birth registrations try just putting in Caff* instead of any variations you can thnk of.
Possible for James in Sunderland Dec 1/4 1871 vol 10a page 627

Yes! That's them :) Thank you. Will check out the birth reg. Of the names I am researching, Caffrey is the one that's giving me the biggest headache. So many variations/misspellings of the name!!
