Looking for a family by the name of Coates in NZ have no idea where to start. Just know James Julian Coates married Emily Josephine Booth in 1870 in New Zealand. The marriage was performed at the brides home and conducted by the Reverned D Bruce.
I am the great, great grand/daughter of Daniel M Coates, (Senior) of Kilgibbon House, Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland the father of the above James Julian Coates. James Julian had other siblings, Eilzabeth, Michael and Daniel. On searching the NZ birth, deaths and marriages I also found a marriage between Julian James Coates and Emma Matilda Heap in 1894. I am assuming that this is perhaps the son of James Julian. If anyone recognises these people please contact me. Many thanks

Emma were granted a Divorce from Julian in 1913 - Emma was the petitioner. Seems they had parted company in 1902, when he deserted her and later left for America in 1904 with another woman. The other woman had Julian's child born in NZ and this child was abandoned when Julian and the woman left for the US. As at the time of the divorce - Julian was supposed to be in New York.

Hi Canberragirl
Suggest you look at the Australian newspapers ... there's a number of mentions of James Julian COATES. :)
He seems to have left NZ shortly after his marriage to Emily.
PapersPast has an item showing he was in financial trouble in 1870.

"Daily Southern Cross" -- 11 May 1870 - page 2 column 4
James Julian COATES, Surveyor, of Alten Road, Auckland
... declaration of inability to meet his engagements with his creditors.

Hi again
In OZ newspapers, you'll also find a couple (perhaps more), birth notices relating to James J. and Emily.
"Empire" (Sydney) ... a daughter born 11 May 1872.
[Seems to be Clara J. COATES as per NSW BMD index ]
and ...
"The Argus" (Melb.) ... 13 August 1875 ... a son (possibly this is Julian James COATES ?? You'd need to check VIC index.) ;)

Emma Matilda COATES went on to marry Walter Henry HUME (in NZ) 1918.
I don't see a New Zealand birth registration for her ... (possibly born in Australia ?)
NZ Death
1954 - HUME - Emma Matilda - aged 85 years (bc 1869)

"The Argus" (Melb.) ... 13 August 1875 ... a son (possibly this is Julian James COATES ?? You'd need to check VIC index.) ;)

Julian James Coates was my great grand father. He left nz with my grandmother's mother Elizabeth Compton (Phillips was her married name) and his wife Emma Coates divorced him. Julian and Elizabeth's abandoned child was Mabel Gipsy Coates Phillips.
My nz cousin emailed me a newspaper clipping today with the story of Julian who also went by the name James Willis. The left Auckland for San Francisco.
