Hi all,
I'm building my database of ALL Forrests in Scotland, not only my direct line which I've got back to 1750.
If you are willing to share the information you have, and allow me to add it to my site, I'd love to here from you.
Who knows, by collating all the knowledge of Forrests out there, we could all benefit.
Please contact me through this forum, or through my site which is here..... http://daval57.tribalpages.com
Thanks
Dave
PS - If you know of any other Forrest researchers that might not see this post, please pass on my link.

Blantyre Kirk Session Minutes: "6th April 1851. Voluntarily appeared Janet Aitkenhead residing at ?Barnhill in this parish confessing that she had brought forth a child in uncleanness about six weeks ago. Being solemnly exhorted to tell the truth declared that Charles Forrest an unmarried man residing at Bridge Hill in the parish of Cambuslang is the partner of her guilt and father of her child. The Session instruct their clerk to write to the Kirk Session of Cambuslang informing them of the accusation made against the said Charles Forrest and requesting them to cause him to be sumoned to appear here on the first Sabbath of May (4th) confronting him with the ... to this meeting. Janet Aitkenhead was called apud acta and after a s... exhortation she was dismissed for the present.
Ibid: "4th May 1851. Compeared Janet Aitkenhead who adhered to her former statement. The Session Clerk produced a letter from the Session Clerk of Cambuslang intimating that Charles Forrest had been regularly summoned and the officer having called him three times at the door he did not appear. The Session instruct the clerk to request the Kirk Session of Cambuslang to summon the said Charles Forrest to compear before the Session within the Church on Sabbath first the 4th May between the hours of 2 and 4 to answer the charge laid against him. Janet Aitkenhead is also summoned apud acta to attend said meeting."
Later records are missing ...!
The errant father was the son of Andrew Forrest and Ann(e) Steel(e), and he was baptised in East Kilbride on 8 February 1829. How do I know this? Because in the 1841 census at Bridgmill, Cambuslang, were Andrew Forrest, 50, miller; James, 15; Robert, 15; Charles, 11; William, 8; Jane, 20; and two servants. All the family were born in Lanarkshire.
Janet Aitkenhead was the daughter of Alexander Aitkenhead and Margaret Brownlie, and she was baptised in Bothwell in April 1832. She married Samuel Heaney in 1854 and died in Glasgow in 1897.
The illegitimate child was Elizabeth Forrest, who appears in the 1851 census with her grandparents at Millheugh, Blantyre. I think she must also be the Margaret Forrest, dyeworker, aged 20, living with her grandmother in Blantyre in 1871.

Hi Dave,
I would love to visit your website and see your Forrest database as I am searching for the origins of my great great grandmother, Ellen Forrest. However, when i requested an invitation, I was denied. Why?
-
Hi,
I've not intentionally rejected any requests.
Please try again, or if you PM me with your full email address, I'll sort it out.
Dave
-
I have tried 3 times with the same result. I have been to your website in the past with no problem, but it has been quite a long time. In order to send a PM, the rules say i have to post a minimum of 3 times. I just joined the forum today in order to get in touch with you regarding the request denial. So, looks like I'll have to post here at last one more time . . . sorry to annoy!
-
Very strange. I can't think of any reason your request would be rejected.
If a request comes through from you I'll accept it.
Or, if you can get me your email address, I'll add you.

I tried again today - still no luck. This is my 3rd post, so perhaps i can now send you a PM.
thanks.

Hi Dave,
I am searching for the parents and ancestors of my great great grandmother, Ellen Forrest (b. Feb 1834 in Scotland, d. after 1907 in U.S.). I have precious little information on Ellen or her family, other than what I have gathered from the U.S. censuses, as follows:
The U.S. Federal Census for 1900, Erie County, Wales Township, (Ellen Stillman), shows that Ellen came to the U.S. in 1840.
I do not know from what port she disembarked, but suspect she may have come into the port at Philadelphia, PA. Since she was a six-year old child upon arrival, I would assume she came with her parents, but have not found her on any ship lists.
About 1856 Ellen married William J. Haslett (or Hazlett). The 1880 U.S. Census shows Ellen Hazlett is widowed and, along with daughter, Anna, lives with her brother, William H. Forrest (b. 1832 in Scotland, d. after 1892), a druggist, in Sheldon, Wyoming Co., NY.
As per a Dec. 3, 1881 letter of her son in law, Jasper D. Wooster, Ellen and daughter Anna were then living in the Philadelphia, PA area, where Anna and Jasper were married in October 1882.
By 1900 Ellen was back in Erie County, NY, had married 2nd, Robyns Stillman but was once again widowed and living in the household of Jasper Wooster (name is misspelled as Worster)
I have a photo of William Forrest (and possibly a photo of Ellen, although it is not positively identified), and postcards addressed to Ellen Stillman. I also have photos of Kate (or Kathryn) Forrest. Although I know Kate is closely related, I cannot determine whether she is a sister or a cousin because the U.S. censuses show both William and Ellen born in Scotland, while Kate says she was born in Ireland. Kate married Jacob Vanaman and lived in Philadelphia. Jacob was killed in American Civil War. Living with Kate in 1880 is her niece, Jenny Forrest (I have photos of Jenny too, but do not know who her parents are; she was born in PA in 1859).
I also have letters and postcards written to my grandmother from "Aunt Mary Forrest" (b. in Ireland in 1848), widow of James Forrest (b. Ireland in 1830) and two of her sons, Lester and Edwin, of San Francisco, California. I am guessing that this James Forrest is most likely a brother of Ellen and William H. and/or Kate.
I hope I haven't thoroughly confused you with all this and perhaps it isn't enough to go on but it's all I have. I read in one of your posts that records in Scotland prior to 1855 are virtually non existent and since my Forrests came over in 1840, attempts to find the names of William H. and Ellen together in Scotland have been futile.
I'm not very optimistic about finding the parents of Ellen and William but thought I would throw everything out there that I know in hopes that something would pop up. Is there any way to determine which clan my Scottish ancestors were associated with?
Thank you for all your help.

Hello Dave
Here is a family of Forrests for you.

Thanks for these.
Both messages bookmarked so I can look at them in more detail when I have time.,,,,I'm still playing catch-up with emails I've had about various Forrest families.

The 1860 U.S. Census gives Ireland as the birthplace of both William & Ellen Haslett. They are in Catasauqua, Lehigh, Pennsylvania with 2 daughters (both born Penna.).

Thanks so much for checking on that for me. I really appreciate everyone's effort in trying to help me, but this has been going on for years and I can't help but feel mine is a lost cause, short of traveling to Scotland and searching records there (LOVE that idea!) but I don't even know what area they came from.
I knew that in both the 1860 and the 1870 U.S. census Ellen's birthplace shows as Ireland, but I believe that was erroneously entered by the census takers. Based on the following U.S. censuses, I have to believe Ellen was born in Scotland.
In 1870 Ellen is living in Philadelphia with her two daughters, Anna & Maggie, in some kind of boarding house. Here, she is born in Ireland. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12349-218814-81?cc=1438024&wc=M9SM-KLG:1524636312
However, by 1880 she is living with brother, William H. (last name spelled "Forest") in Sheldon, Wyoming Co., NY, and both Ellen and her brother are born in Scotland, as are their parents. (http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6742&iid=4243690-00557&fn=W.+H.&ln=Forest&st=r&ssrc=&pid=5770064 )
The NY State census for 1892, shows her living with new Hubby, Robins Stillman in Aurora, Erie Co., NY, and was born in Scotland.
And finally the 1900 U.S. Census shows her living in Wales Center, Erie County, NY with her daughter and family, Jasper D. and Annie Worster [Wooster]. Again, she's born in Scotland, and came to the U.S. in 1840.
Having researched this for years (literally), I have found other Forrest families that could be potential family members but even though they live in the same general area, I just can't be sure.
Much of my information is derived from resources in my possession including many letters written by my great grandfather, Jasper D. Wooster; from autograph books belonging to my grandmother (daughter of Jasper D.) containing little notes written by "Aunt Mary Forrest" of San Fransisco and cousins, Lester and Edwin (sons of Mary); from postcards sent to my grandmother from Lester, employed by UCLA in California; and postcards sent to Ellen Stillman - one of which was addressed to "Grandma Hazlett Easter Sunday 1908, from that Old Quaker, S. Ridgway Kennedy" (photo attached). I located and made contact with an ancestor of Mr. Kennedy, but he has no knowledge of Ellen or the names of Forrest or Hazlett. On top of all that, I have an old photo album belonging to Jasper Wooster which includes photos of Forrest family members.
I apologize for this lengthy post but I just wanted to let you know where I am in the search for my Forrest family. My quest is to find the parents of William and Ellen, to discover other potential siblings and to determine wither Kate was a sister or cousin but, again, it is undoubtedly the proverbial needle in the haystack.
-
You mentioned earlier that her brother James was born c1830 in Ireland. My gut feeling is that Ellen's family might have been from Northern Ireland (possibly Co. Londonderry) and that the family might have gone back and forth between Ireland and Scotland.

Found this on George Forrest the planthunter, Daval,

Skoosh.

Cheers Skoosh.
I actually have that bookmarked.
I've actually got a fair bit on George and his family, mostly courtesy of one of his relatives.
I've never found a link to 'my' lot yet. I think it's unlikely, but if there is a connection, it's many generations earlier than George.
Dave
I do have a Pieris Forrestii in my garden though! :D

Hi Dave
There are more Forrests on the other side of my tree.

Thanks for that too. Added to my ever growing to-do list! :)

I'm not sure she has a brother, James - that was purely speculation since James was the deceased husband of Mary in San Francisco, but your suggestion is certainly worth further investigation! Thanks.
-
skye, regarding Ellen Stillman, it might help to get her death certificate from New York assuming that she died there. The ones from that era typically have a space for parents' names. Whether the informant had the information is another story, but at least it's a possibility. There is a library in New York that will do look-ups in the death index, as explained here - http://www.unyg.com/blog/index.php/2008/03/new-york-state-vital-records-microfiche-indexes-update/ A date of death might also lead to an obituary.
If that doesn't pan out, I see that Jasper & Anna are listed on www.findagrave.com. It might be worth checking if Ellen is buried in the same cemetery.
-
Apologies to all again, that are waiting on some reply from me. I've just not had the time or inclination to get heavily involved in genealogy again for over a year now.
Having said that, I just made what I THINK is a breakthrough in my Forrest line, hopefully taking it back one more generation to circa 1700 moving my family from the Stirlingshire/Dunbartonshire areas over to Midlothian/East Lothian areas around Dalkeith / Elphinstone areas. Details on my tree site and other RC post here: ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=678242.msg5229340#msg5229340 )
A HUGE shout out too to Marion C who has added a considerable amount of info to my tree re her Forrest line, mostly in Nth Lanarkshire. I've been making promises to Marion for ages that I would add her details from her gedcom which she kindly supplied. She finally gave up on me. :-[ But I gave her access to my site as an admin so she could add it herself. Great job she's done so far. Much appreciated and I hope it helps put her and other researchers of the North Lanarkshire Forrests in touch. Cheers Marion.
Link to my Forrest site is at the bottom of this post. Everyone with Forrests welcome to request an invite.
Dave.

1801 Matthew
Just thought I'd mention that he could be named after Janet's grandfather Matthew Smellie.
-
I think I may have replied to the wrong post Dave but you probably know who I am referring to. Janet Rochead also had a brother called Matthew.
-
Thanks alys, you're probably correct. As you say, Janet's brother was Mathew - I'd forgotten that. Too keen to find meaning from the name elsewhere. ::)
I'm intrigued by your reference to "Janet's grandfather Mathew Smellie." Was that simply supposition on your part, or have I missed something. So far, I don't think I've traced Janet's mother's parents. If it's a guess on your part, it's a good one that I've never considered before. In my defence, Smellie is a line I have never followed through fully yet.
.....and yes, albeit the 'wrong' thread, I knew exactly what you were talking about. :)
For other's benefit, I have another, more specific, Forrest thread on the go here....

Not a guess about Mary's parents. I'll send you a pm with a report. A lot of the info comes from sasines and records for Quakers in the archives in Edinburgh. I've added a lot of info to my notes today to help you see just where I got the information. I have lots more! There are quite a few Dunbartonshire sasines for Andrew Rouchet (other spellings possible!) and Mary Smellie (ditto spelling!) One in particular mentions children who are not in the OPRs. I have images of some of the Smellie sasines, also images from the Records of the Society of Friends if you are interested. If you can add anything at any time, or spot an error, please get in touch.
-
That's amazing alys. I see there is a PM from you too. I'll go have \ look at that now.
Excited.
;D
