Post by: doylers94 on Saturday 30 July 11 10:19 BST (UK)
Anyone researching a James Neill born about this time in County Down living at 60 Hill St in Lurgan 1901 (Grocer) possible marriage to Ellen Holland on 1.2.1859 and have found a Banbridge birth registration for a James Neill around this time but think birth place likely to be Tullylish or Donaghcloney?? Thanks. PS Could be Magheralin but think they registered Lurgan?

Hi,
Civil registration of births did not start until 1864 in Ireland. The "registration" which you have must have been copied from church records.

Thanks but this man according to the census was born in county down and the many variants of Neil Neale Neile Nail McNeill ONeill is frying my brain. My grandmother and her father were definetly Neill but I fully expect to run into an ONeill or Mc Neill in previous generations.
