Title: albion street peterhead
Post by: margmasson on Saturday 30 July 11 00:01 BST (UK)

Can somebody please tell me, where is or was Albion Street Peterhead?
Some of my husbands family were living there at the 1871 census

hi Marg.  :)

here is an 1868 map of peterhead -

http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74480556

if you look about the middle of the main part of the town and locate marischal
street , albion street is just up from that , between errol street and back street

Thank you so much for that, Ev. Is the street still there or has its name been changed?  I could not find it on Google Maps.

erroll street and back street are on modern maps but there is no straight line
between them so it looks like albion street has been built over  :(

Albion Street was completely demolished in 1975 & replaced by the Drummers's Corner shopping centre in 1981.
I got this information from "Peterhead Street Names" by David M.Bertie.It is available to buy from The Family History Society of Buchan. I'm sure someone will be able to find a photo of Albion Street given it's fairly recent demise!

Thanks  for that  Flst.  Would be great if someone does have a pic. The family were living at 14 Albion St on the 1871 census. Head of the house James Masson, was a labourer at granite works. Would this have been a quarry and perhaps close by?
 Your help is much appreciated.

Yes, there was a large quarry at Stirlinghill, Peterhead. Peterhead granite is red in colour.
That's the extent of my knowledge on granite! Try "googling" the subject.

Hi Marg

I’m also researching the Massons and Henderson’s of 14 (and 4) Albion Street! I am presuming that we must also be related!

Please drop me a line!
