Hi everyone,
I wondered if anyone could help? I am tracing the Rogan family who have lived in the whitehaven area for a number of years. I am particularly interested in the Irish connection which I havent got to yet! I have got as far as Charles Rogan 1913-1991 married to Ruth Benson. I think that his mother was a Kennedy and would therefore show up on the 1901 census but I am drawing a big blank. Could this mean that she came over from ireland after 1901? There appears to be a lot of rogans around this time. Could this be an influx of Irish? Again would catholic baptism records be kept with the church or in an archive somewhere else. Also Charles was a coal hewer. Is there anywhere that retains pit lists of employees from the 1930s and earlier? I hope this makes sense and that somebody may be able to point me in the right direction as i am going round in circles!!

Hi and welcome to rootschat
I am assuming that you have got the Kennedy bit from looking for a birth in 1913. If you then look for a Rogan/Kennedy marriage you will find one in Whitehaven in 1906. However, I would be happier if you had a copy of Charle's marriage certificate to show his father's name and confirm his age. You could then check the census records knowing that you were looking for the right couple. Do you know the names of any of his brothers and sisters? That might help pin down the family too. My own Irish ancestors came over in the mid 1800s so you might find yours have been established in Whitehaven for longer than you think.
Regards
Andrea

My uncle was a Rogan. He lived and worked in Barrow in Furness at the Vickers shipyards but I believe his family came from Whitehaven and before that, Ireland. He died about 20 years ago, in his seventies. He was in the army during the war. There are still family members with that surname. I don't know if that information helps.
-
Hi Yogi
Your post just caught my eye -I have a family member that married a "Rogan". They lived in Workington, Cumberland again with associations of working at an Iron foundry or ship yard.
I think sometimes this family has been transcribed as "Regan". If it's any help the Workington Rogan's although from Ireland seem to have lived in Middlesborough for awhile!

Hi Yogibear82,
I am married to the grandson of Charles Rogan. What relation are you to the Rogan family of Whitehaven? Please get in touch maybe we can help piece some things together for you.

Hi Maxi,
Thanks for getting in touch! Can I ask who your husbands father is? This is just so that I know we have both got the right family!
Many thanks,

Hi Yogi,
That is no problem. How do we go about it?

To send a PM (personal message) to someone, simply click on the little green scroll in the area under their name.
-
Hi
If you click on the green scroll under a name it gives you the option to send a private message and then you can exchange email addresses. One of our rules is not to give details of living people so being able to use the pm system means you can exchange that sort of data.

Hi Yogi,
My grandmother's sister married a Rogan in 1925. Their son told me that the name was thought to be Scottish. I don't know if this helps or hinders. They're Whitehaen Rogans.
-
Hello I saw your message about your Uncle.
My mother was a Rogan the name is indigenous to County Down in Northern Ireland. And I've been given to believe the Rogan name is purely Irish.
My maternal grandfather was Patrick Rogan and he came over to work in Barrow in Furness and married my grandmother who was from barrow she was called Frances Thompson. She was an only child and her mother my great grandmother died and my great grandfather later remarried and moved to London.
Does any of this relate to any of your information?
Kind regards

My father was Edward Rogan he died in 1990 in his seventies, was in the army WWII and worked in Vickers. My grandmother came from Ireland and my father“s sister, my aunt Madge married and divorced a Wright although she kept her married name. I don“t know if they came from Whitehaven. I am trying to put together my family tree. If you have further info I would be very greatful.

Hi leftalone, welcome to RootsChat :)
There was an Edward ROGAN died in 1990 ... his birthdate was given as 20 Jan 1915.
As you mention Vickers, I guess we may be talking about Barrow ... there was
Births Mar 1915
ROGAN Edward (mother nee DONNELLY) Barrow F. 8e 1391
and also
Births Mar 1912
ROGAN Margaret (DONNELLY) Barrow F. 8e 1407
Marriages Dec 1909
ROGAN Edward Barrow F. 8e 1475
DONNELLY Margaret Barrow F. 8e 1475
But there was another Edward ROGAN born in Barrow in 1915 - mother nee FAHEY - he too had a sister Margaret but she wasn't born till 1926 (there were several more siblings too).
-
Oh. Wonderful, Geoff
They“re my father and grandmother. I also found the other E Rogan (Fahey), it was quite a coincidence, really, same names, yr of birth and sister“s name too. My father had 2 other siblings, 2 brothers who died young as did my grandfather so I never got to know them. My father was married and widowed then remarried my mother who had been a widow herself, as she had lost her 1st husband during WW2. Thanx for your info. I would appreciate any other that you may find as I don“t live in the UK and my remaining bros are from my mum“s side, I am the only one alive from my side, so it“s hard to find much from them.
Are you from Barrow?
Thanks for your help.
-
Are you from Barrow?
No. I was once on a train that stopped there, that's all. :)
I have sent you a PM (personal message). You should be able to find it via a link at the top of this page.
-
That“s what you call a sheer coincidence!!!!!!
Cheers
-
Thanks to all who helped me find a large part of my family“s history. ;D
Really very grateful, every single bit of info is deeply appreciated. :)
Never thought my family was so big.
Cheers :)

My ROGANs seem to also arrive at Whitehaven and were born in Ireland, Co. Down.
Daniel and Mary nee McGRAW
His father seems to be Patrick as well.
children 1851 census:
charles
thomas
james
mary
barney
elizabeth
david
mary jane g/daughter
not mentioned in this census is Eleanor born in 1832 in Ireland.
Daniel was listed as a agriculteral labourer but he is also a blacksmith,
at the time was a different Charles ROGAN in Whitehaven who seems to have remained in Whitehaven.
Daniel ROGAN moved from Whitehaven to other towns in Cumberland and finally to Bolton.
Charles, Daniels' son, later moved to Northumberland.
