Hi every1
Im hoping sum1 can help me. My granda was Robert Montgomery b 1909 d 1946. He married Elizabeth Laird Stevenson b 13/04/1912. Robert's parents were Alexander Walker Montgomery & Jessie Davidson. Ive been able 2 locate family members on the Stevenson side (mostly thru my grannie b4 she died) but always hit a brick wall on the Montgomery side.
My grandad (Robert - Rab or Sanny) was killed in the 'black muck' at Cowie pit in Oct 1946
Thanx
Liz Condie (ne Montgomery)

Hi Liz :)
I'm not clear if your brickwall is coming forwards on your Montgomerie line or going backwards. You'll be aware that we can't mention the names of any living people on RootsChat so coming forwards might be difficult.
If it's going backwards, there's this marriage showing on ScotlandsPeople ( www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ) :
1909 St Ninians, Stirling: Alexander Walke(r) Montgomerie and Jessie Davidson
This cert will give their parents names and maybe help with a brickwall going backwards.

The 1911, Bannockburn, has Alexander Montgomery as aged 26 and born Irvine, Ayrshire. With him and Jessie (aged 22, b. Shotts, Lks) is Alexander's brother Robert, aged 23, also born Irvine, Ayrshire.

Coal miners did tend to move around different coal mines for work as one was depleted and others were sunk/expanded . Mine certainly did.
The best match that I can fine on the 1881 is
2 Front Street, Kilwinning, Ayrshire
Robert Montgomery, 58, coal miner, b. Irvine
Jane, 55, b. Stevenston
Robert, 21, coal miner, b. Kilwinning
Hamilton, 18, coal miner, b. Kilwinning
Agnes, 13, b. Kilwinning
And this from the IGI:
Birth, Kilwinning. - Robert Montgomerie, 2 May 1860.
Parents - Robert Montgomerie and Jane Baillie
Haven't got a firm hit on Jessie Davidson on the early censuses yet but there is a birth entry on SP in 1888, Shotts.

Had a sneaky look on Jessie Davidson's birth cert - noticed that daughter Mary's middle name was Weir.
Shotts 6th April 1888
Jessie Davidson
Parents - Marion Weir, domestic servant and John Davidson, journeyman blacksmith. John signed the cert as well as Marion. I don't think that they were married. His address was given as 225 Crookston Street, Glasgow.

Hi Liz
I just had a look on ancestry.co.uk and there is a family tree on there that matches your Montgomery or Montgomerie i think you should have a look at it.
It has Robert Montgomerie born 19 Apr 1823 in Irvine.
Marriage to Jean Banks Baillie on the 2 Aug 1846 in Irvine.
Death 1884 Irvine.
They have his parents as James Montgomerie and Elizabeth McCulloch.
If you search with the above info i hink you should find it easily you may need to register to have a look tho.
Hope this helps

Hi Liz :)
Sorry not to get back straight away as I heard yesterday that a cousin had died earlier in the week.
I've done as much to my trees as I can at the moment so I try to help others. I also have an interest in coalmining and the SW of Scotland.
I've now gone back 4 generations on your Alexander Montgomery line (to circa 1760 in places) but I'm trying to get it all together as I've followed all his lines back(28 ancestor, I think!). I've got back to Kilmory, Bute on Catherine Walker's line :D
I'll put up all the details tomorrow or Monday.
gnu
Ps - Hazel - the death cert has Robert's mother as Agnes McCulloch and the baptism has Elizabeth . I'm doing a check on the tree as many of the Ancestry ones are a wee bit out and shouldn't be taken 'as is'.

really sorry 2 hear of your loss. dont rush 2 get the info on here 4 me - ur own personal stuff comes 1st.
Im still totally in awe of the info you've given - Ive worked out (with you giving the info obviously) that there wasnt a James Montgomery 4 nearly 200yrs. My brother (who I wont name but it is one of the common fam names) had a wee boy in 1990 who he called James (Robert) but he only lived 4 5months & it was really nice 2 c a James down the line. Thanx agen.
Best Wishes

A bit more - I've not entered the dates into my FH program yet.
Alexander Montgomerie's ancestors so far.
Montgomerie-1 is the Robert Montgomery b. 1860 line and Montgomerie-2 is the Catherine Walker line.
The Kerr line (starting with Marion Kerr) are from Bute, James Montgomerie is from Ireland and Elizabeth McCulloch is from Kirkcudbrightshire. I think the others are all from Ayrshire.
Will add the dates and places later and be back ;D

hi,
i've stumbled onto rootschat and came across your postings on several of my ancestors, so i signed up and have sent you this message to ask you about some information on my family tree.
my grandmother was abigail mcgeachy montgomery b.1890, daughter of robert montgomery and catherine walker. my father remembers uncles visiting when he was younger but not much about them (he's now in his 80's) i have been on scotlands people for the last few years and i had managed to get as far as james montgomery / agnes mcculloch but ran out of ideas until i came across your own postings.
i was interested to note that you think they were from ireland. do you know whereabouts?
regards

Hello Liz.
Spotted a headstone in Bannockburn for a Montgomery Stevenson and just wondered if there was any connection to your tree.
Cheers.

Hi Liz, I wonder if you are still doing research on the Montgomery family. I share a number of your ancestors. Jane Banks Baillie and Robert Montgomery are my 2x Great Grandparents. Their daughter Jane Montgomery (who married David Stevenson) is my Great Grandmother. She lived in Kilwinning and then Crosshouse. I'd be interested to share details of our tree if you get back to me. Regards J

If anyone comes across Robert Montgomery/ie, born about 1847 or maybe around 1843 (sources for his age vary), parents Robert Montgomery/ie and Elizabeth McNaught, I'd be very interested.
He married a relative of mine, Elizabeth Evans, on 31 December 1870 in Glasgow. Elizabeth had - how shall I put it? - a chequered career. She was, for instance, in the County Prison in Paisley in 1881, and she ended up what the Inspector of Poor described as 'cohabiting' with her cousin.
But it's Robert I'm now interested in. His marriage certificate describes him as a jewellery hawker, and his wife's death certificate says he was a photographer. There is a Robert Montgomery, married, boarder, photographer in 1881 in Wishaw, and in the same household is another boarder, Mary Montgomery, also described as married. Apart from that possible sighting, I have failed so far to find his birth or death or any other census record, so all information will be helpful.
