Hello
The WW2 fighter pilot John Agorastos Plagis married Joan Bolton in Peterborough Northamptonshire in 1944. Does any one have any more details please? Or are you related?
Thank You for any help

Just Google "John Agorastos Plagis" and you will find lots of information and photos of him.

Thanks for your reply. Yes there is quite a lot on John Plagis available on the web. I should have worded the request clearer. I am trying to find out a bit about where he married and who Joan Bolton was. They had 4 children but later divorced.
Regards

Are you certain that they are both dead,as Rootschat doesn't allow the names of living people on the message boards.
You will have to purchase the marriage cert to find out more about Joan, her maiden name was fairly common and there must have been loads that might fit.

Hi Carol
John Plagis is deceased.
You can order a copy of the marriage cert from the GRO www.gro.gov.uk
Sept 1944
BOLTON Joan Plagis Peterbro' 3b 648
BOLTON Penelope A Plagis Peterbro' 3b 648
PLAGIS John A Bolton Peterbro 3b 648
As there is the possibility than Joan was also known as Penelope, you can order the cert in his name only, John A Plagis
There's a possible death entry in 2007 for Penelope Plagis

Thanks for reply
John was from Rhodesia and in 1956 moved back there, he sadly took his own life in 1975, not sure if his former wife is alive or not, probably not.
Not sure where you got the Penelope connection from, it does not come up on site I am using, mine just says also married July , Aug , Sept. so presume your site confirms Sept.
I am doing some research on Plagis so this is background detail. Trying to avoid having to order certificate if possible.
Thanks for your posts.

If you're serious about research you'll buy the cert. Jul-Aug-Sep means the marriage was registered in that quarter and could have taken place at any time in any of those 3 months.
An alternative to getting the cert from the GRO would be to check all the Peterborough parishes for it - but they may have married in a register office or non-conformist or Catholic church so personally I think getting the cert from the GRO is the simplest way.
You might find an obituary (don't know where, if he died in Rhodesia) which might give more info about the marriage and his wife.

Hi Paul
The details of the marriage index entry are freely available on www.freebmd.org.uk

Thanks for that Dawnsh. That site confirms September.

It also confirms that Joan was also known as Penelope ;D

Hi Paul
Registrations after 1837 but prior to 1984 are compiled in 4 quarters Jan/Feb/Mar (March 1/4) April/May/June (June 1/4) July/Aug/Sept (Sept 1/4) and Oct/Nov/Dec (Dec 1/4). After 1984 they are compiled yearly with registrations recorded monthly.
freebmd confirms that the marriage was regiestered in the September 1/4 of 1944, the marriage took place in one of the 3 months making up that 1/4, either July, August or September.

I am thinking that perhaps she was born plain old Joan, but having married a WW2 fighter pilot ,decided that she'd prefer to be known by a more 'exclusive' name ;D
Dawn did that 2007 death give her DOB/YOB?

From the GRO death index 2007
Plagis, Penelope Anne born 9 Sept 1921
Death registered Kingston upon Thames September 2007
I also check the Probate calendars but there's no entry under this name.

Thanks Dawn- sadly no Joan A or Penelope A Bolton registered in the Sept or Dec 1/4 of 1921 ::)
Could it be that this was a second marriage for her? Therefore she would not have been born a Bolton.Only a marriage cert would tell you that.
Unless whoever registered her death did not know her too well and didn't get the DOB right.

Hello to all who have contributed.
I have managed to trace the niece of John Plagis, who has confirmed that his wife was known as Penelope or Penny but no other details.
They apparently had a daughter called Romain who died of Polio at an early age. strangely I cannot find this birth listed altough there is a death listing for a Romayne H Plagis in Thanet in 1960. Four years after John left to go back to Rhodesia. So presumably divorced by then.
Even more strange is that I live in the Thanet area so she maybe buried near by.
