Title: BRITISH SUBJECT - ITALY

I have a family member who was born in Italy as a British Subject does anyone know where I might be able to find out more??????

Could his father be in the army??

It would depend upon the period. But you should look on the overseas/consular and regimental BMDs on site such as Findmypast.

Its in 1815 and I'm not sure which regiment to start with!

Up to 20 regiments provided troops to campaigns in Italy from 1806 to 1814. Wives were probably only with the men when they were in Sicily.

Other than looking in the BMD records I have suggested, you can look for the father's record on Findmypast. But only records for men awarded a pension have been kept. If you can post details of where/when other childen may have been born, it may help to identify a regiment.

A 4x great uncle of mine appeared in one census as being born in Italy in 1808. In the other censuses it said Sicily or was specific and said Messina. Fortunately, when his father left the army and returned to Scotland he had the boy's baptism recorded at Macduff and it said he had been a private in the 10th Foot. Oddly, a sister appears in the censuses as being born in France, but that baptism was not recorded on return.

I only have information from the 1841 census which is as follows

John Hails born abt 1815 British Subject Italy

Do the other censuses give any other information as to where in Italy?
I have a relative that was also b abt 1815 in Italy. One of the censuses stated that he was born in the Mole of Genoa. So far that is as much as I have been able to find, emails to a number of Italian addresses have thus far been unanswered :(

Have you checked the National Archives index for Chelsea Pensioners for the father? There might just be a chance he appears there. Have you found the father in a census? What does it give as his occupation? Have you come across any siblings, and if so, where were they born?

Natural B is not too helpful here - means British by descent rather than by naturalisation or denization.
