Could anyone tell me if someone was buried at Bolton, Cumberland where this would be?
I believe Bolton is somewhere near Wigton, would this be right?

And if you find any of my lot, sing out. I've forgotton when the parish records become unreadable (around 1799) and I was waiting for the new archives to open to see if they had better reading facilities, UV or IR or any other set of initials. bob ;)

Thank you very much.

I hope to visit Bolton churchyard next weekend. Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to look out for and/or photograph.

Hi Cazza
Not sure if you can get to the local record office. If you'd like anything looking for, let me know. I can get in quite a bit at the moment but not sure how long that will lasty.
I'm looking for some bits in this and a couple of other illegibles, so I'm taking another look and I might even try the BT's - not perfect but they might shed some light on the situation!
Best wishes
Emms :) ::) ::)

Thank you Jane, I am not sure how big the churchyard is, might be hard to find, but if you could take a photo of gravestone(s) of John Ackerley-born 1776 buried 14th April 1851 and his wife Isabella Ackerley- born 1782 buried 18th April 1853. That would be great.
Thank you for the offer.

Thank you Emms.
When you say local office, do you mean the new archives centre in Carlisle?
I have benn thinking of going myself, I do all my research online have never actually been into a records office.

The churchyard's not very big but some of the older gravestones are very worn, even so I should be able to identify the right one. I'll see what I can do for you, Carol, let's hope weather and small children co-operate :)

I went myself last Friday - the big difference compared with others I've been to is that there is no lack of elbow room.
The place is air conditioned and there is an icy blast coming down from the ceiling. Wear a hat and a thick cardy. (http://bestsmileys.com/cold/11.gif)

Still at the chateau but everybody says it's already winter up there. Is the temperature so low in there for the documents do you think? Did you enquire about uv and ir and other ways of viewing? I'm so excited after walking past it so many times on my census walks, I can't wait to visit ::) bob

There are two major rooms - the one I was in had microfilm viewers and not particularly special books. I think perhaps the other room - visible through a glass wall - may have been for the more delicate resources.

Hi
Haven't been in yet either. Can't wait!
At least it shouldn't be as stifling in summer as the old sear5ch room at the castle! :)
Everything unter one roof! Nothing away at Houghton Great!

Hi Bob
I'm glad Rootschat's reaching the chateau!

Hi Cazza
You must go into a record office! There's so much more that's not online - huge scale old maps, the really local newspapers - get a date if you can - the parish records apart from the registers - and the catalogues to see what's survived for your area, original records - to say nothing of the amazing expertise of the staff - and other researchers.
But you probably know all that!
To answer your question I'd normally be in Carlisle but I haven't seen it yet as I said abopve, as I'm on an extended stay in West Cumbria so I've been getting to know the office in Whitehaven.
The films for the parish registers are in both but the originals and other records that go with them are split. North Cumbria in Carlisle and the rect in Whitehaven.
Not as simple as that though as the offices have different collec tions so check before you go - there are lots of details on A2A or ring.
Meanwhile I'm not sure if you're local or not but you're welcome to a lookup.
Emms :)
