Title: Hazlett Family Manchester
Post by: GillianNixon on Tuesday 26 July 11 18:32 BST (UK)
Looking for the burial of James Hazlett, Portrait Painter, died 1882 in Salford, the family seems to have used St Clements but I am not sure if this church has a burial ground or if there was a municipal cemetery in Salford,

Also looking for any further information on this family. His widow remarried in 1885 to a Henry Twigg.

Wow thanks very much for your replies. HOWMUCH will check out the Chester connection, as far as I am aware the family never left Salford, but he was quite an accomplished artist so maybe he was on a trip out.

I note that his wife Elizabeth was born Stockport, Cheshire and that in 1871 were living with his wife's family so there is definitely a Cheshire connection.

However, you state that Elizabeth remarried in 1885 but on the 1901 Census she is listed as Elizabeth Hazlett, widow i.e. no remarriage!!

This info is transcribed on the Lancashire OPC site where Elizabeth Hazlett had a child baptised at Salford St Clement:
Elizabeth married Henry Twigg at St Clements as well, also on the OPC (do a search for the surname Hazlett in Salford, they all come up)
Something to do with this family happened in 1884 as well, if you look at the baptism for John Willie Hazlett :
"19 Apr 1882 St Clement, Salford, Lancashire, England
John Willie Hazlett - Child of James Hazlett, deceased & Elizabeth
    Born: 2 Mar 1877
    Abode: 98 Oxford Street
    Occupation: Artist
Notes: certificate 3rd Sepr. 1884 for ___sham? to 48 Rop__? R___? Lane"

james.h.twigg age 11. b. salford. occ. errand boy. son
emma twigg age 12. b. salford. daughter
living at;7,hulme street,salford,lancs

could this be your elizabeth
there is a john hazlett and a james hazlett on the 1881 census with james/elizabeth
their birthdates and birth places matches the john.w.twigg and james.h.twigg on this census
could this joseph twigg be henry and maybe something happens to him and elizabeth is widowed by 1901 and for some reason reverts to the name hazlett
the big question is her maiden name "lowe"

mary jane paulson age 29. b. salford. head. (marr)(this is obviously the mary.j.twigg aged 19 on 1891 cernsus)

Wow thanks everyone, I have found out that James died  in the asylum in Chester, so the plot thickens this is certainly going to be an intresting family. I still need to find out where he is buried though and if I can find any of his paintings.

Hello Gillian

There is a gravestone for John Hazlett, Portrait Painter, who died May 9th 1837 aged 70 years, in    St. Mary's parish church in the Market Place, Stockport. He is buried along with a family named Etchells.

Edward Etchells               d.11-12-1794       46
Edward (son)                  d.4-6-1791           10 mths
William  (son)                 d.2-5-1804           15
Robert Etchells               d.23-3-1845         59
Mary (wife of Robert)      d.15-9-1861          74
Caroline (dr.of Rbt & Mary)  d.31-8-1837       9

Gideon Burton (son in law of Rbt & Mary)  d. 29-1-1854      37

John Hazlett Portrait Painter  d.9-5-1837      70

Edward Etchells was a Chapman.  Gideon Burton was a Draper, Oldham Street, Manchester.

John Hazlett has no entry in St. Mary's parish records.

I am a local historian in Stockport and have transcribed the gravestones and allocated numbers to them and I often wondered who he was and how he ended up in Stockport.

Could you let me know anything about him. I am undertaking a second booklet of interesting gravestones and this one was on the list.
