Hi,
Trying to trace back from a Gottried Max KIPP ( also used the name George) born 1863/5 - died 1904 . shown on the 1901 census as being born Germany
(british subject) He was a ladys tailor living in Heddon Street, London.
His father was a Garrard KIPP a pianoforte maker
Gottfried is shown in BMD but nothing on the father so assumed he was still in Germany - is there anywhere showing entry for german nationals entering UK prior to 1901 or any idea how to start enquiries in Germany.

Hiya...I have checked on this site....sorry...no luck....but you may want to keep this site for future research
http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/merseysidealiens/aliensname.htm#KAAS
for the record I went on to Record Pilot - and put in .... Kipp - Germany ...1,212 babtisms...the vast majority from Hannover ....can I ask where you got the name Garrard ???...was it an English record....might be Gerhart originally ??

thanks for the reply, the name Garrard was shown on an english 1895 marraige certificate of Gottfried. I have assumed that Gottfried came over at some time prior to that from Germany. No idea if with any family or not. Not sure if Garrard is a germanic name, Gottfried certainly droped the Max on some documents and also used the name George.

Hi Chinthe,
in present directory for Germany the far most entries for KIPP are found in the city of Steinfurt, Münsterland, Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW):
Steinfurt (city, NRW / 173)
Borken (city, NRW / 65)
Bielefeld (city, NRW / 58)
Rottweil (city, Schwaben, Baden-Württemberg / 58)
Soest (city, NRW / 39)
Wetteraukreis (county, Hessia / 37)
Herford (city, NRW / 36)
Zollernalbkreis (county, Baden-Württemberg / 36)
Minden-Lübbecke (county, Westfalen, NRW / 34)
Hamburg (28)
Looking at this distribution of that name today I'd start my research in the north-west of NRW (practically ALL of the above mentioned locations in NRW are more or less situated there) where most of the entries for KIPP are to be found.
Good luck for your further research!

Many thanks , this is very helpful and I will start my search from Steinfurt. (when I find it on the map !)
Can I ask where you found this information, is it public access, just in case I need to dip back into the information you have provided.
best regards

Hi Chinthe,
here's the requested KIPP-link, it can also help you locate the respective places on your own German map:

Should you need any further help with the above German site, just let me know.
Regards from Hamburg,
Gisela
