The website Hearth Tax Online (http://www.hearthtax.org.uk) has surname indexes and transcripts of hearth tax documents (early modern - c. 1660s) for a number of counties including County Durham, Kent, Surrey, and the North, East and West Ridings of Yorkshire.
The indexes and transcripts can all be downloaded, completely free of charge, in PDF format, and the site also contains statistical information, parish maps and other resources for the featured counties.
There are a number of other counties, including Essex, London and Middlesex that are listed as "coming soon" so it might be worth keeping an eye on it or signing up for the e-mail newsletter.
Looks like it could be a really useful source of material.

Hi doc,
Just to say your post is appreciated and it will probably be extremely useful to the people whose areas it covers; long may it flourish and expand!
Pinot :)

Welcome to rootschat docbones.
The online index sounds interesting. Anything free has got to be a good thing. ;D
Do you have something to do with this site? I notice you have started several threads 'advertising' it. We are not really supposed to post the same thing multiple times, so I expect all but one will eventually be removed by the moderators. ;)

Thanks DocBones
Wonderful resource. :D
I can't wait for the expansion of data.

It would be more helpful to move them to the Resources boards for the relevant counties. ;)
