Hi Zander,

Limited information on the death record but to help those searching James Queen was born 31 Dec 1900 Glasgow. Scotland to James Queen and Annie Brennan.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0eee/

There is a family living at 316 Nuneaton Street. Glasgow in 1901 which looks to be the family.

James Queen Born Ireland and34 years.  Boiler Fireman and Annie Queen Born Ireland aged 29 years
Thomas Queen Born Ireland aged 10 - Annie Queen  Born Ireland aged 5
Jonas Queen Born Ireland and aged 3 - James Queen aged  3 months.
Thomas Brannen aged 20 Corporte Street Sweeper. Brother-In-Law. Born Ireland.

Coincidence ? Two brothers travel from Glasgow to Halifax. Nova Scotia arriving 14 April 1914 on the Hesperian.
Jonas Reilly Queen aged 16 years and James aged 13 years. Both from Scotland. Quite a number of children travelling on this voyage.

Jonas Reilly Queen born 21 December 1898 Glasgow. Scotland, appears on Canadian Soldiers of WW1.
Resides:- Osgoode Station. R.R. 4   Brother is James Queen. Occupation Farmer.
5 ft 6 ins Medium Complexion, Blue Eyes, (Left eye crossed)
Dated June 24 th 1916

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0eef/

Jonas does not show up on the US SSDI Index.

IF these are the correct brothers, then the marriage for James Queen could well be in Canada  ???

Hi Zander,

Thanks for your message. You would need to ask Shelly (Moderator for the USA Board or any other moderator who happens to be online)  to move this to the Canada board for you.

It might be worth an e-mail to the public library in Providence to see if they could locate an Obituary for James. There is a connect with us link below to  ask a Providence Public Library librarian a question.  ???

Good Luck

Hello folks  :).

The top of the passenger manifest page has Quarriers Party written on it. This indicates that the boys were sent to Canada as Home Children. This in turn has generally indicated that something has happened to their parents so you might consider searching 'scotlandspeople' for a death or deaths of one or both.

Here is a link to Home Children on the RootsChat Canada Board Resources ....

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355348.0.html

And a link about Home Children in the Canadian Archives. You will find the boys listed there .... scroll down to the database .....

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-908.009-e.html

At this link to Jonas' Attestation Papers you can find (at the top of this page) information about how to order his complete military file which may provide further info ...

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=594267&interval=20&&PHPSESSID=3uf1ab1lf1g1ad1u418u0u8ql4

If you google Quarrier Home Brockville Ontario you will turn up a lot of general information.

Hi Zander,

Just to try & explain that there are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 80 years ago and deaths 70 years ago. So the privacy laws would restrict access to marriage records in the timeframe you are searching in.
Trying to trace modern day families in Canada you depend on newspaper announcements, cemetery records, obituaries, telephone directories etc

Hi again.

More questions than answers ....

Have you looked for Jonas and James in the US censuses? They are available up to 1930 on the familysearch.org website.

The Canadian 1921 census is expected to be released in early 2013 so that might provide some info if the brothers are still in Canada. Bit of a wait but not too long now.

Do you know anything about Alice Plante at all? Birth place? Parents? Her death which might provide a clue?
Plante is a name that is usually of French origin and would not be out of place in the area the boys were in in Ontario. The Ottawa area also borders the French province of Quebec. Haven't found a marriage record though, unfortunately.

Hi,

Yes, checked for the 2 brothers and Alice, the wife of James on Census and border crossing to the USA before this was transferred from the US board. Unfortunately, could find no city directory entries for James or Alice in Rhode Island either. Rhode Island marriages only available up until 1916 at the moment.  A few Plante families around Rhode Island but no further information on Alice to go on.

Don't know if brother Jonas remained in the Ottawa/Osgoode area. There is a Queen family in a nearby locale, but the chances are slim. Never hurts to drop a line and try, though.

As Sandra pointed out, you have a death date, so a search for an obituary for James might help find a little more information.
You may be lucky and one day have the descendants of Jonas find you. They may or may not know more than you. Not unusual for Home children descendants to not know very much about their ancestor's childhood.

On page three is the address to which you could write to find out more regarding the Quarrier's end of it. Records were supposed to be kept of a child's care and status in Canada. It is not easy to acquire all the information collected, but persevere, as it is the right of family to know.
http://www.barnardos.org.uk/childcare-2.pdf  ( they likely also were in a Scotland Quarrier's institution before sailing.)

Hi Zander and JJ,

A fellow Rootschatter sent me some information for you regarding the Queen family almost a month ago, unfortunately I haven't been able to pass that on to you until now, so apologises for the delay.

The father - James Queen died 6 May 1908  cause of death was Lobar Pneumonia.

The Mother - Annie Queen nee Brennan died 28 Sept. 1911 -  her son Thomas reg death - she had many things wrong with her and had given birth 18 days previously -  she was 40 years old.

Son Thomas - Thomas died 26 October 1971 - 50 Park Road Rosyth Fife -  he was widower of Kathleen Jarvis -  he was an armament depot labourer (retired)  Thomas married Kathleen 23 April 1913 in Glasgow - they had a son as he registered the death.

Daughter Annie married Robert J. Laird 16 July 1915 Glasgow - Annie died 13 Dec 1984 -  Cleland Hospital Cleland Lanarkshire - usual address was 92, Glenside Drive Rutherglen. Annie was a widow aged 89  - her daughter in law  of the
same address reg death. Will send the name by pm

Hope this helps to fill a few blanks.

Sandra

Hello zander.

I would contact the cemetery directly (you s/b able to obtain contact info by googling the cemetery). If they can provide a date you could then try asking the local public library to do a newspaper search for a death notice. Most libraries have an 'ask a librarian' feature on their websites.
