Title: GIDLEY of Kenton Devon

Hi,
Can anyone help, i am trying to trace William Gidley born 1805 in Bovey Tracey, who married Fanny Cudmore born 1811 in Kenton.
They married in The Parish Of St Mary Steps in 1834, can any-one help me find find their parents
please, as i am at a loss to know where to look next.

How do you know that William was born in Bovey Tracey and Fanny in Kenton?


There's a Christening for a Fanny Cudmore 16th February 1812 in Mamhead which is in Exeter. Parents Thomas Cudmore and Mary ?

If they married in Exeter it looks like this record could be the Fanny Cudmore you're looking for.

I can't find a Christening for William though.

Thankyou for your reply, in answer to your question of where William was born.
We have found him on the 1851,71,81 census,stating he was born in Bovey Tracey, however on the
1861 census, it states that he was born in Kenton.
In regard to Fanny on the 1851, 61 census, it states Kenton, on the 1871 census it states Mamhead.
Where did you find the information on her christening, as we cannot find any infomation on her,
the same also applies to williams christening.

Don't always believe what the censuses say it all depends on who gave the enumerator the place of birth and if they can remember dates, ages etc. What you have to take into consideration is that they were probably illiterate so had to rely on memory. If you're unsure about any facts widen the area or dates. What I tend to do is look for the place of birth on the earliest census I find them on it's more likely that it's correct than later censuses.

I found Fanny's Christening on www.familysearch.org but I couldn't find William's.

Thanks so much for your reply so quickly, we will check out the family search website there maybe more info on that site than the ones we have tried, will take on board your tips and see what becomes of that.
