Hi Everyone
I found Henry Knight Eaton on FamilySearch in the 1861 census as follows:
Name: Henry K Eaton
Event: Census
Event Date: 1861
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Relationship to Head of Household: Lodger
Birthplace: Glamorgan Swansea
Record Type: Household
Registration District: Swansea
Sub-district: 2 Llangafelach
Ecclesiastical Parish: St Johns Clydach
Civil Parish: Llangafelach
County: Glamorganshire
I would love to know with whom he lodged. Would someone with access to the census find this out for me please?
On a secondary note, I have him with two different fathers from two different sources. ??? MyHeritage has a father as Robert Eaton and a personal family history on Ancestry has the other father as John Eaton, a banker. Would anyone have any ideas as to how I can confirm his parentage?
(Sorry, for the two requests in one.)
Thank you

A bit of a funny census eh? Henry has been written in as head of household but then it is crossed out and lodger written over it.
Pantlase Llangafelach
Henry K Eaton Lodger Widower Foreign merchant Swansea
Jane L Eaton 12 dau Swansea
Ellen Isabella Row DAU 14 Yorkshire
Martha Williams single 34 Cook
1851 has Henry with a wife Stephibak 28 (transcribed and looks like that on image. Born Truro Cornwall. It is of course Hepzibah.
Jane is down as Jane Lewis age 2.

Golly! The plot thickens...that's the problem when you ask questions.
His first wife was Hephzibah. She died in 1856.
He remarried in 1862. I was toying with the idea that he had lodged with the family of his soon to be wife. I was wrong.
but foreign merchant ??? That's new to me. He was a minister. I wonder when he took orders then.
Thanks Crisane for you help.

Go to family search.org and there is this
Birth Henry Knight Eaton 18 Aug 1820
Father Robert Eaton
Mother jane.
-
Do you have the 1841 census where Henry is in the same household as a Jane Eaton age 20 also and a John Eaton age 50.
For Jane and Henry it says ind (independant). For John it begins with B but I tend toward Boarder. Not banker in my opinion.
The Jane Lewis dau in 1858 is Jane Lewis Eaton birth reg Swansea 1848 vol 26 page 552.

Thanks Crisane
I just looked at Family Search! I must have typed something incorrectly. Ok, I'm happy: father is Robert.
No, I hadn't seen any 1841 census. So Henry would be 21, Jane must be his sister, and John must be a relative, possibly uncle?
I believe that the mother's name was Knight, because from Henry on they seem to just keep adding everyone's surnames as the children's middle names.
This is all good, thank you

On family search there are these other children born to Robert and Jane
Thomas 14/ Sept 1814
Ann Knight Eaton 23 May 1816
Robert Eaton 10 Sept 1817
Jane Eaton 12 March 1819 The one with Henry in 1841?
Margaret Eaton 12 Sept 1822
These are all Non-Conformist records.
-
Oh Crisane! I was just about to reply...
thank you so much, I went back into Familysearch using your date and found something called an Ancestral file and it has Robert's mother and father and siblings in it! (needless to say I am very happy and a little smug)
And these siblings are wonderful.
I'll have to look up Non-Conformist Church for that era and I'll have to find out what church-type Henry became a Vicar to.
This has been wonderful. Thanks

Have a look at the "Cambrian Index" on line. It is a searchable index to items that appeared in the old Swansea newspaper. For example
The Cambrian 11 Sept 1813 - Marriages - Robert Eaton, Banker, of Swansea to Jane Knight, Dtr of Henry Knight, Merchant, Radcliff (page 3).
Plenty of references to the name Eaton (a great many in fact!)

Very clever find.
