Title: bottom boat - old streets
Post by: tinabrown1953 on Saturday 23 July 11 04:13 BST (UK)
Does anyone know anything about the old streets in Bottom Boat, Stanley.

The 1881 census turns up names such as "Prospect Place", "Calder Terrace", "Limbs Houses".

A google map of Bottom Boat only seems to have 4 streets on it (other than Bottom Boat Rd) which are St Peters Crescent, Holmfield Close, Nettleton St. and Barker St. There are a few more roads (dead end streets by the look of them) on the map but they are not named. Anyone know what the names are?

Hi

Interesting, could Limbs Houses be named after the Limb family. The Limbs in my family tree only came to the Stanley area in the 1860's and they lived in Ferry Lane.
I have for a few year now thought there was another Limb family in the area but I was not sure.

Hi John
Most likely named after Limb family.
There was a George Limb b 1833 with wife Elizabeth who in 1881 was living at Bottom Boat Grocers Shop

i know these used to have houses/slums on them.
My grandad was of the mining community, and i believe these were knocked down many years ago.

Have you any idea whereabouts in Bottom Boat, Calder Terrace might have been?

im afraid i dont at the moment, however i'm still trying to persuade my grandfather to show me where he lived when he gets chance to travel the 30miles here, i'll let you know where it is on an arial map. :)

Tina are you sure you're limb family isn't Lamb? They are a bottom boat family that still run their clog business there, although it's a shoe importer for M&S now :) This is my grandfathers family, the Lambs.
