Title: British Postal Service Appointment Books
Post by: nell1850 on Thursday 21 July 11 22:30 BST (UK)
I've just found a name I'm researching in the British Postal Service Appointment Book on Ancestry. I need some help interpreting the abbreviation in the column labelled 'Situation to which nominated'. It looks like Lr Cr. or maybe Lr Gr. It appears against numerous names. Can anyone advise me? The record is for John Ward Sept 1882.
Many thanks

Thank you for that suggestion. That does make some sense. On one of his children's baptism records, he is described as a rural postal messenger! :)

Nell - some Post Office appointments also appeared in the London Gazette so you may also find him there. In case you haven't tried there:

See list of abbreviations at the very end of the Family History Guide on the British Postal Museum and Archive's website: http://postalheritage.org.uk/page/3292/Family-History-Research-Guide
No obvious matches, but perhaps this will give you some leads.

The Ancestry database is a bit of hit and miss, not all appointments are recorded and with the end date I am also missing from the entries.

I don't know about you, but I need some frown remover cream  ;D

If they'd just included the "h", we all might have guessed that the two women in your list were telephonists.
