Trying to establish where Penmark is in Bedwelty in 1841.
Census info:
monmouthshire. Bedwelty. Tredegar. District 23 page 12
Place: Penmark
The only Penmark I can find is more south of Tredegar, could this be the place? And where can I find information on Penmark during the 1800?
Thanks in advance if there is anyone who can help.

The Census original image includes "Sirhowey Iron Works".
You can find Sirhowey and Penmark on a google earth. Dukestown and Nantybwch are close by, just off the Heads of the valley Road.
Bryn Pica is on the original census image I looked at. Have found Penmarc (the original spelling) and Bryn Pica on a an 1886 OS on line map.

Thank you. I orginally thought the same, however on the census "Sirhowy Iron Works" seemed to have a line through it (wasn't sure what it meant).
I couldn't find this Penmark/Penmarc on Google, only the Penmark in the south of the area very close to Penarth and close to Cardiff Airport. I will try again.
So I am right in assuming that the Penmark in the south, close to Penarth area and Cardiff Airport, is not the same penmark I am researching near Sirhowy and Dukestown?
And also do you know if Penmark was a street name or place/area, maybe farms in the area or a place for the coal miners to live? I do know Sirhowy well and the surrounding areas, I also have family in Tredegar, but wasn't sure of the place Penmark, so if it is where I thought it was that's great!
And finally, I was wondering if you would know of the parish church situation for that area in and around 1840. I am now researching baptisms and I have a very interesting situation to investigate, so any info of that area would be great, so if you know of any websites I would be very greatful for your help.
Thanks in advance

google "sirhowey"
shd display map "Sirhowey, Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent". Click on map.
Penmark shd appear North of Sirhowey.
It is not the Penmark near Cardiff which comes up if you google "Penmark"

In the 1841 Census, houses were not normally numbered.
On the 1851 Census you find the houses are numbered for "Penmark" - 16 households. Again, the original Census sheet is endorsed "Sirhowey Iron Works".

On the 1851 Census 16 households are numbered and listed against Penmark and the final sheet is endorsed "10 uninhabited households at Penmark". The 1841 Census has 28 unnumbered households listed against Penmark.
The first 1851 Census sheet is endorsed (informally) with "Sirhowey Iron Works" and in the Official Box marked "Village" is recorded Sirhowey.
The 1886 OS map has a an area Penmarc recorded North of Sirhowey. I can't work out if there is a cluster of houses there or not from the map.
But Sirhowey/Penmarc(k) is the area you are interested in, not the Penmark near Cardiff.

Wondering if anyone knew of any parish churches around Penmark/sirhowy around 1841.
I'm searching for a birth record for an Edward Pritchard to a Sarah Pritchard who was born obviously at Sirhowy Iron Works in Penmark in 1840, there doens't seem to be any reg of the birth, so I'm hoping that the child may have been baptished in a local church, maybe a parish church belonging to the Iron Works? trouble is can't find any local parish churches in that area for 1841.........
Any help is appreciated

Hi there,
No I haven't found his birth yet, seems very odd, I have obtained the cert you mentioned and it transpires the mothers name is Blanch Pritchard and father John Pritchard and need it to be Sarah Pritchard/Prichard, have also obtained other certs in the area at that time, as I went through the census for 1841 and all the babies born in the street were registered at Abergavenny and it states he was born in the county. I often wonder if he was registered in another name (the fathers name) as Pritchard was Sarah's maiden name, gets very confusing, but am still searching and searching for different clues to try and find him.
I'm not sure if you know the story but Sarah Prichard lived with her sister Mary Jones in 1841 in Penmark, Sirhowy Iron Works, just herself and a baby, when I checked the next census 1851, there is no trace of her as a Prichard or Edward, both are renamed as Bevan's, So Edward probably didn't belong to Thomas Bevan because if he did she would have put Edward Bevan on the census rather than Prichard, as Thomas was only living further on down the street in 1841.
Anyway, I am still looking but welcome any comments....thanks!
