I am trying to locate the family of a George Aitken and Janet Cairns.
From the family Search Index I have found that George Aitken was the Son of Robert Aitken and Isavella Borthwich.
George was born in 1828 in Broughton, Midlothian, Scotland his death is estimated at 1882.
He married Janet Cairns on 8 July 1851 in Saint Cuthberts Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Janet Cairns father was Thomas Cairns.
In 1952 there was a record of a George Aitken and Janet Aitken on board the William and Mary headed for New South Wales.
The Brisbane City Council shows a grave Location for a Geoge Aitken at the Cemetery known as Toowong Burial year 1882.
I the found the following Children:
Janet Cairns Aitken born 1854 Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Burried in Toowong Cemetery Brisbane in 1910.
Isabella Margaret Bothwick Aitken born 14 Jan 1856, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Could not find a burrial site.
John J Aitken born 1859 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, burried Toowong 1935.
Thomas Cairns Aitken (my great grandfather) born 1860 Brisbane Queensland, Austalia. I believe he died on 6 June 1893. He married Annie Young Dewar, and their children were Janet Aitken, Christina Brough Aitken and Thomas George Aitken. The lived in Mackay Australia.
Georgina Aitken born 6 Jan 1862 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. No burrial record.
David Aitken born 28 March 1864 Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Burried in Toowong Cemetery 1940.
Catherine Alexandra Aitken born 1868 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. No burrial notice.
Marion Moffat Aitken born 5 June 1870 Brisbane Queensland Australia. Death 18 November 1942 . No burrial notice.
Elizabeth Mary Aitken born 11 April 1873 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. No burrial notice.
If anyone is researching this family line, I would love to chat to you. I would love to correspond with any of the decendents.
Thanks

Hi
I've just come across you're post.
I'm from Nsw and in my family tree I have an Alan Aitken Cairns born 1944.
I don't know where he was born or who his parents are. He married Elizabeth Linton-Smith in 1965 in Nsw.
Are these any relation to your Aitken/Cairns?
Thanks

Do you want any more checking done on your family? The girls who you mention without a grave location probably married & could be present with their married names. Do you want any of these checked in the Qld BDMs. You can also probably find funeral notices for some of these folks which may mention descendants and where they were living.

Hi Trish
My appologies. I was just going through my old posts and saw that you had offered to check on the families. I guess with Christmas, New Year, my son going into hospital and me flying back to South Africa for my moms surgery, I somehow missed this. I am still feeling a bit scatter brained right now. If you are still willing to do some research for me I would appreciate it. If you are busy I fully understand.
Have a wonderful day

Hi Ruth
As you will see from my previous post that I missed these posts.
I do not know much about the Aitken families so I truthfully cannot answer whether there is an Alan Aitken Cairns in the family, although I will say that in all the naming the family names went Cairns Aitken.
Sorry to have left you hanging.

Hi Sharleen
I have been very slowly (sorry) checking the BDM records for your family. I have a few changes to the information you have supplied. (I have no idea which would be correct ??? )
George Aitken died 30 Dec 1882 Ref 1882/B015290 Father Robert Aitken, Mother Isabella Borthwick
Janet Aitken (his wife) died 10 Jun 1910 (you had this date for his daughter) Ref 1910/B012581 Father Thomas Cairns Mother Janet Draper
They are buried in the same grave at Toowong Portion 14 Sect 6 Grave 26
(I will get to take some photographs in the next few weeks)
Buried with them is maybe granddaughter Edith Janet Cairns Hardy (this is name from cemetery list) buried Oct 1883 (Isabella married a George Hardy).
I found the following children
John James Baptism 20 April 1852 Reg 1854/BP2440 parents George & Janet
Janet Cairnes Baptism 8 March 1854 Reg 1854/BP2519 parents George & Janet Cairnes
The remainder are Birth dates (rather than baptism)
Isabella Margaret Bo 14 Jan 1856 1856/B000031 George & Janet Cairnes
Georgina 6 Jan 1862 1862/BA00958 George and Jennet Cairnes
David 28 Mar 1864 1864/B002513 George and Janet Cairns
Marion Moffat 5 Jun 1870 1870/B011221 George & Janet Cairnes
Elizabeth Mary 11 Apr 1873 1873/B015801 George and Janet Cairnes
There is also a death (but no birth record that I found) for
Catherine Alexandra Died 5 Nov 1873 1873/B008089 George Aitken & Janet Cairnes
I could find no birth record for Thomas Cairns Aitken.
If you purchased the death certificate for father George, it may contain a list of all the children as the informant would probably have been his wife Janet, so she should have known all their names & ages.

Hi, Sharleen,
I've only just discovered this site, and was excited to read of your interest in the Cairns/Aitken line. I am a descendant of George Aitken and Janet Cairns, through their 8th child, Marion Moffat Aitken. I have a lot of information to share with you (but this line remains a work-in-progress for me).
Regards,
Kerryn

Hi Kerrin
Thanks for responding. I have been off line for a while. My mom passed away in May taking me back to South Africa for a while and then just readjusting to this loss has taken me a while to get my mind back in focus.
I would love to hear more about the Aitken family. As I said my grandmother was an Aitken and I really know very little about that side of the family. I know alot about her mothers side, which was the Brough Dewar line, going back many generations and as you will see Trish did some research for me and took quite a few photos of grave sites.
However I would love to read more about your family line.
Work in progress always seems to be the correct phrase. I have about 6 lines of work in progress. As they always say weddings and funerals are the place where you touch base with family and I certainly have done that.
Please send me a personal message with your email and I will follow up with what I have on the family line.
Thanks for contacting me

Hi All
I am researching this family line also and wonder if anyone has found out more on Robert Aitken and Isabella Borthwick, and was Thomas Aitken married to Margaret Story, George's brother? Any help would be appreciated.
-
A Thomas and Margaret Aitken were on the same ship as George Aitken and his wife Janet (and her family, Thomas and Janet Cairns and siblings) when they came to Australia in 1852 aboard the "William and Mary".
Do you have anything to link Thomas and George as brothers?
Regards,
Kerryn

Kerryn I just emailed you something I found on my file. Lin if you send me your email I will mail that to you as well. Sorry I have been so behind on following up on this.
Best wishes

Hi Sharleen & Kerryn
Thank you for your quick replies. I am only new to this addiction, how do I send you my email address Sharleen, is it safe to put it on this post? Kerryn, the reason I think they could be brothers is that they came out together and they both had daughters called Isabella Borthwick Aitken but I haven't been able to go back further to Robert and Isabella to see how many children they had as I don't have any information on them. I did join the 14days free on ancestry and that has finished so I thought I would join up shortly to do more research. My husband is descended from David Cairns Aitken. Thanks again. Regards, Lin

Hi, Lin and Sharleen,
Here's a teaser from another poster, Pam. It shows possible information about Robert Aitken's birth. Because the birth is in Lanark, and our George is from Midlothian, I'm not sure about it. BUT when I consider that George and Janet named one of their daughters Marion Moffat Aitken (my great-grandmother), I'm inclined to accept it!

What do you think? Hope you're enjoying your new hobby!

Thanks Kerryn, it is worth checking out as they seem to like using family names but their is no Robert in either family. There is twins in both George and Thomas's family. Toowong cemetary records are good for tracing this family as a lot stayed around the Brisbane area. Loving it but it is time consuming.

Hi Kerryn, Sharleen
In the ship log, George, Thomas and Margaret show their parents as James and Isabella Aitken both dead. I assume from this that they are brothers and sister but can't seem to find anything on their parents and on George's death certificate it says his father was Robert but I am now thinking it was James.
Regards Lin

Hi, Lin,
It really is a "slowly slowly" situation. It would be good to get Thomas' death cert - I'll get onto that soon.
I'm happy to share my research on Thomas and Janet Cairns family - I have a lot on each child.
Regards,
Kerryn

Thanks Kerryn. I did join ancestry and I have been going through and attaching birth, marriage and death certificate information to each of George and Janet's children and their children so would love any information that you have to add to that. Thanks again :) :)

I too am a granddaughter of David Cairns Aitken. He married Catherine (Kate) Leahy in 1891. A daughter of theirs, Mary Janet (or Janette) married William John Rudkins. My mother, Moira Estelle, was a daughter of theirs. She married Norman George Walsh. I am the eldest of their children. I can fill in a fair bit of information about David and Janet'sfamily.

Hello,
I have these families in my tree and a few days ago revisited this part of my tree.
I don't know who the informant was but I rule out Robert as being George's father.
Both George and Thomas named their second daughter Isabella with a middle name of Borthwick. It's unlikely to be mother's name so possibly grandmother or earlier for George and Thomas.
The 1852 arrival was not the first for George and Thomas.
Thomas aged 19 first arrived in 1841 per 'Herald' and his father is listed as John (wright)
George aged 19 first arrived in 1842 per 'Margaret' and his father is listed as James (mason)
They are either half-brothers or cousins and unlikely to be brothers.
George has not been found in 1841 census yet.
No likely marriage has been found for their parents. No likely maiden name has been found for Isabella. There are several middle names besides Borthwick and Cairns - Moffat, Murray, Munsden.

Janet CAIRNS parents - Thomas & Janet
Children
John James
Janet Cairns
Isabella Margaret Borthwick
Thomas Cairns
Georgina
David
Marion Moffat
Elizabeth Mary
Margaret's parents - Robert & Elizabeth
Children
Elizabeth
Isabella Borthwick
Jane Munsden
John
Margaret
Charlotte
Naming pattern would suggest parents were John & Isabella so it is curious the 1852 shipping record has James & Isabella for both George and Thomas. Also parents listed as deceased by 1852 but no idea when or where they died.
No parents listed on death reg for Thomas.
Thomas and family ended up in Townsville. In later years George and family were in Brisbane.
Many things will remain a mystery.
