Alan,
Thankyou so much for finding that for me! I am very grateful indeed to you for giving up your time to help. I will see where that leads!!

Hi,
I have Great Marlow marriages on fiche so I had to wait until I went to the local Archives before I could look for your Thomas Holmes.
There is no marriage for a Thomas Holmes there in the timeframe you described.
Given the proximity of Hambleden to Great Marlow, I'd say the 1790 marriage Alan found there must be favourite!

Looking at my Great Marlow baptisms, which thankfully are in booklet form, I can find these children to Thomas and Elizabeth Holmes:
Charles baptised 28 Jul 1793
Thomas 31 Oct 1802
Elizabeth 17 Aug 1806
There's such a big gap between Charles and Thomas that it seems likely they were elsewhere for a while.
Possible relevant burials:
Thomas Holmes 23 Jun 1822 age 60.
Elizabeth Holmes May 1836 of Juniper Hill, Great Marlow age 71.
I'll have a look later and see if I can find a baptism for Thomas senior in GM.

Hello there Jill!
I do have a charles Holmes 1793 down as a question mark, as a son, so it is wonderful that you have clarified it for me. I also have a Mary Holmes 1790 Hambleden, down as theirs as well, as they were married there. I also have a John Holmes 1792 Great Marlow down as a possible son. But then back in Hambleden again, there is a James Holmes 1797. Maybe they did flit between the two places?
The only Thomas Holmes Senior with the right sort of dates i can find, lived no where near Great Marlow.
The 5 i can find where Thomas Holmes 1763 Compton Berks, Thomas holmes 1769 Arborfield Berks, or Thomas Holmes 1760 Milton Keynes, Bucks, Thomas Holmes 1770 Iver, Bucks, or one in 1770 Lavendon. I have not checked Oxfordshire though.
If you can find a Thomas Holmes in Great Marlow or nearer, that would be fantastic!
This area of my tree has had me pulling my hair out for years!
Thank you for your time and efforts Jill. I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Sorry - no Thomas Holmes baptised in Great Marlow in anything like the right timescale.
Also, the John Holmes baptised in GM 6 Nov 1791 is the son of John & Ann.
I've got a CD of Medmenham PRs - Medmenham is between GM and Hambleden - but you can discount it. No Holmes apart from one burial in 1848. Similarly, Little Marlow can be discounted - just one Maurice Homes baptised in 1655, son of Richard & Mary Homes, vagrants. :(
I know from experience of researching in this area that my ancestors have crept over county borders into both Oxfordshire and Berkshire!!
Have you considered requesting a name search from Bucks FHS? They're very reasonable price wise and very very helpful. I've had loads done.

Hi Jill,
Once again, a very big thank you for taking the trouble to look into all this for me. At least with your info i can take John out of the possible children, but who were John and Ann Holmes!? lol... Maybe they are related to my Thomas. I did not know about a name search. I will look into this. At least there are some thomas Holmes to look into, in other areas, better than not finding a name at all!
I really appreciate your kindness in helping.
