Title: Do you have an interesting family tree story?
Post by: CKB on Tuesday 19 July 11 17:13 BST (UK)
Hello

I am a feature writer and I would like interview women who have traced their family tree/ancestry and found out something really interesting or something that has changed your life in some way.

If you would like to share your interesting story, please send me a message or reply to my post with an email address for me to contact you on and I'll be sure to get in touch and give you more details.

Many thanks.

Hi, CKB

To guard against "spamming" we don't display email addresses, and you need to make three posts before the personal messaging system works.

Just thought you ought to know!

Good luck with your writing.

'Hat.

Are men excluded about making contributions about their female ancestors? Off the top my my (bald) head I can think of at least three who could be interesting.

Don't hold your breath!  Most people are a bit wary of journalists at the moment ............ can't think why ::)

Well, that is a shame. Please don't tar us all with the same brush.

Well, I'm sure you appreciate why we're a little cautious at the moment.

Can you give us a few more details?  What is the feature?  Where would it appear?

Great. I write for a reputable women's magazine and I'm putting together a feature about tracing your family tree and would love to interview women who have traced their family tree and discovered something about their family - perhaps they've met close relatives they never knew existed or found out really interesting information about their ancestors. It would involve a short telephone interview and you would also need to be OK with having your photograph published.

I hope the feature will be interesting to our readers as well as help inform them about how to trace their family tree.

If you're interested, do message me. I'll be sure to get back to you.
Many thanks for your time.

So... who is writing the 'how to do it' part?  What are their credentials?

Why do I ask this? Because there are many articles (and indeed some books) on family history published that contain information that is out of date or  downright wrong:  I teach family history and I really don't want to appear to endorse incorrect information.

You are aware that there a quite a few specialist magazines available:  many of these will accept articles on 'an interesting family tree' and will pay for these.

Why does it have to be women?

I understand that it's for a women's magazine, but a interesting family story is going to be interesting regardless of the gender of the person who discovered it.

This site is full of such intriguing stories, but in many cases it's not obvious whether the contributors are male or female.  It's not important.

Without sounding too cynical ladies, I would suggest not to supply any information until until the credentials of CKB can be confirmed.

Maybe he/she could supply a work email address of the magazine, substituting the "@" symbol with the word "at"?

Just a thought......................................?

I am intrigued as to why (s)he hasn't replied to the question are family tree stories by men about women wanted?

CKB, may I suggest that it would be a good idea to at least name the magazine involved? The internet is a big place, and unfortunately not everyone out there is trustworthy, and while we have no particular reason to distrust you, the amount of information you have given us so far is not really enough to win our trust. The more information you give us, the more likely it is that some of the women on this site will be willing to share information with you.

:)

I was wondering that also. (s)he appears to be completely ignoring the questions asked, making me suspicious, and now (s)he has vanished!

A VERY interesting mystery. There could of course be an innocent explanation, illness holiday etc. But I wonder?

I think perhaps CKB has found some resources for her story elsewhere, Redroger, as this site has been a little tricky.

Assuming that the request was genuine.

Oh yes, assuming she was genuine.

I think her silence was leading us to believe that maybe she wasn't genuine, but I'm just suggesting she might have posted in perfectly good faith, and found us all (absolutely legitimately, I may add) a little tricky.   ;)

I think that as well. I am doubtful if the OP is genuine now if she gives no clue to the magazine.

Naughty of me perhaps, but I don't see why someone else should profit from my hard work!

I agree Cati, it's bad enough when your tree gets plagiarised on another site, or when as has happened to me with some other work it has been posted without any acknowledgement of my copyright.

Well, that is a shame. Please don't tar us all with the same brush.
I hesitated for a split second before posting the above in case it sounded a bit paranoid, but the response from RCers is exactly what I hoped for.  A close friend was interviewed once by a 'feature writer' for a 'reputable women's mag' on the subject of her career change.  I have the article - it's a work of fiction complete with unauthorised photos, and caused an awful lot of trouble for my friend.  And that was before the current scandals.
Just this once, I'll do as my mother told me - Don't talk to strangers >:(

Regards to all, Carol

I think the OP is trolling or just a big wind up merchant.

PS CarolA3rd I notice you have ancestors from Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Warwickshire, so do I. But I cannot recognise any of your names in my tree.

I have read some really rubbish articles on how to go about FH: and I can just imagine the scenario where one of my students says 'But in that article you were in it said that you don't need to get birth certificates' or something else horrendous!

The OP has not been online for over a week and may - or may not - have seen your comments.  Let's hope that a response is given soon.  They may be able to allay the worries being expressed but in the meantime, there is no obvious reason not to present a friendly welcome to this member.

If you have any major concerns, please report them to the moderating team and let them deal with the matter.  It is the best way forward.

Thank you.  :)

Hello,

Just out of curiosity, would this person (or anyone else, for that matter), be able to simply copy and publish any of the fascinating stories on this site, as they are in the public domain? Is there any legislation to prevent this? Social networking and forum users are often quoted in newspapers and magazines - would they have to give their permission to be 'quoted' or have their comments published, or is it just professional courtesy to ask permission? I hate to sound cynical, but what would happen if someone were to notice their 'story' in a publication - especially following this?

Those are good questions.

Isn't it sad though when we are led down this road thoughtwise because of what society has become.

I agree with the OP that we should not tar everyone with the same brush therefore I am sure she will allay our worries when she next logs into the forum

At least thats what I am hoping as I have managed to find out some very interesting facts about my ancestors  :)

Its me being cynical again:

1) the request is for women only

2) your photograph is required

3) wants to talk to you on the phone, therefore I presume you supply your phone number in the PM he(?) has requested.

4) your family tree would also include your age, and marital status

Me thinks it sounds a tad "fishy" (just my opinion).

The only thing interesting about my ancestors is whether they used a pick, spade, or get-away cart....

The original poster hasn't been online since 25 July so naturally they've not responded to this thread but will perhaps choose to do so in the future. Meanwhile please remember what Administration has already posted-
