Title: Denis Moroney
Post by: maggie smith on Monday 18 July 11 16:52 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on Denis Moroney.  He married Catherine Condon, and had Four Children, Ellen 1867, Mary 1871 (my grandmother),Alice 1868 and Catherine 1864. On the birth certificates it has Priestown as thier place of birth.

Iwould like to find out where and when he died and where he was buried.  I never knew him as I was born to late.

Any information of this family would be welcome

Many thanks in advince
Maggie

Hi...

I did find a death for a Denis Moroney but it was in Bansha in 1881. I did find a marriage of a Denis Moroney to Catherine Condon 1855 in St. Peter and Pauls Parish in Clonmel. Also I can find 5 matches to children of Denis and Catherine but these births look like they are registered in the Ardfinnan area of south Tipperary.

Do you know where Priesttown is?

If not, its a townsland between Drangan and Mullinahone. I live in the next townsland.

I will be going to Dungarvan in August.  How far is it from there and in what direction.  I do not drive, so is there any busses I can catch, if so what number and where.

Are your Moroney's from Drangan? (Priesttown is in Drangan) I don't see any Moroney's in the census' in Priesttown. Priesttown is a very small place, I'd say no more than 8 families live there now. Of-course there was many more families / houses back in the 1800's.

What do you want to know? I might be able to help, as I practically live in Priesttown.

All I would like to know is did he have and brother or sisters, and the name of his parents. Or any other info that can be found.  I have the year that Mary Moroney died, it was 1947, Tipperary (she was my Grandmother).  When did Denis die?

I don't see any Moroney's in Griffiths in Priest town. If you find out where they were living, I'd be glad to take some pictures of the house / land.

What I will do for you this evening is check the inscription booklet I have for Drangan's one and only old graveyard. Maybe there will be some Moroneys. I will also check Mullinahone's inscription booklet. I'll let you know the results.

I think it may be the other Priesttown... I linked one of the births (Mary 1871) , and it's registered in the district of Clogheen, and the subdistrict of Ardfinnan as Annie mentioned.. that district looks to be south of Cahir ?

see :

here's a link the other townland of Priesttown on google maps ..   link (http://maps.google.ie/maps?saddr=ballynamult&daddr=Prieststown+to:newcastle&hl=en&ll=52.247247,-7.780552&spn=0.059067,0.147285&sll=52.1773,-7.711029&sspn=0.236639,0.556183&geocode=FeqrHAMd2f6J_ynbI4afljtDSDGhzroZqMcAJg%3BFQTuHAMdonOJ_ynbshKP1jtDSDFiYLi6p8cAJg%3BFXadHQMdU9CI_ynZpMJE4DlDSDFQGDKXqccACg&mra=ls&z=13)   (marked 'B')

It's located between Newcastle and Ballynamult, which is just across the border in Co. Waterford.

If the registration district on birth cert you have has Clogheen then I think it would be this townland. The other Priesttown townland seems to be in the district of Cashel.

Based on the dates of birth for the eldest child I see on the extracted records (Catherine in 1864), I'd say the couple married before the start of Civil records. So you would need to check parish records. There could also be other children to the couple before 1864..

Annie's earlier post mentioned a possible marriage for    Denis & Catherine in Clonmel - which is about 20km north of this Priesttown.

There's a possible relation to your Moroney family listed on Griffith's valuation in the townland of Priesttown as leasor of a house and about 55 acres of land - see : John Marony (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=58&Submit.y=12&familyname=marony&firstname=john&baronyname=&countyname=TIPPERARY%2C+SOUTH+RIDING&unionname=CLOGHEEN&parishname=NEWCASTLE)  (AskAboutIreland.Ie)

These valuation records are dated 1852.

You can view the details of Griffiths valuation online and free of charge on the AskAboutIreland website - see :  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Or click on the link in my previous post (John Marony (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=58&Submit.y=12&familyname=marony&firstname=john&baronyname=&countyname=TIPPERARY%2C+SOUTH+RIDING&unionname=CLOGHEEN&parishname=NEWCASTLE)) to go directly to the results which show John Marony. You can view the original return for Priesttown by clicking on one of the icons on this page in the column marked 'Original Page'.  Griffith's was a land taxation survey, and shows the details of occupiers and owner/landlords of property

Hi I am looking at a Dwyer family that came from Newcastle CO Waterford. And I came across your post after seeing priesttown referenced to newcastle Tipperary. I am on the trail of my great great grandmother who was a Dwyer and who I believed to have lived in Dungarvan so looking at your Google ,map directions make sense that it it is the same location. Is Newcastle in Co Tipp or Waterford??
Thanks

There are quite a number of towns and townlands named Newcastle in Ireland - about 36 in Total. See the townland database at : www.thecore.com/seanruad

There's a town and townland named Newcastle in Co. Tipperary, but I dont see any in Co. Waterford.

The town of Newcastle, Co. Tipperary mentioned earlier is quite close to the Tipperary/Waterford border.

Hi Anne
I have kind of gone of that trail as I never made any further findings. I was trying to find Catherine Higgins nee Dwyer and all I know is that she had possibly a sister or mother  Hanora Dwyer, but I was never able to find out where she was from. I know she lived in Dungarvan in the 1860's and died there in 1874.
