Hi Brownie

Welcome to Rootschat!

I don't see your Charles in Bedminster, but there is a Charles Brookes baptised at Westerleigh 29/7/1804 son of Henry and Mary. Could this be him?

Thanks Anne.  I will keep this in mind but I don't think this is him.  In 1851 census he declared his birthplace to be Bedminster, and in 1861 he said Bristol, Somerset.  I think Westerleigh is Gloucestershire.  Thanks for looking.  Brownie.

Westerleigh is about 10 miles from Bedminster, to the east of Bristol. There are some Brookes baptised in Bedminster. Might be worth looking into Henry and Mary. Sometimes children were baptised in the mother's place of origin.

Thanks again, Anne.  Do you happen to have details of any of the Brooks baptisms in Bedminster.  I will look into Henry and Mary but I do not see them on the 1841 census so not sure which way to progress.

Many thanks, Brownie

Hello Brownie

Only two Brooks baptisms in Bedminster in your time period, surprising as there look to be quite a few marriages. Might be an indication that they were non-conformist?

5 Aug 1791 William of William and Mary Brooks
6 May 1798 Sarah of James and Sarah Brooks

Thanks again, Anne.  All information is gratefully received as I have no access to Bedminster parish records.  Incidentally the Charles Brooks I am researching moved to Monmouth before 1841 and is therefore shown on 3 censuses before he died.  May I ask how you are able to access the Bedminster records?

Regards from Brownie.

Yes, I spotted your Charles in Monmouthshire. Very annoying that the baptism seems to be missing, do you get any clues from his children's names? I seem to remember only the younger ones were born in Monmouthshire though, so you might not have the names of all the older ones.

I've sent you a PM.

Have no marriage for Charles Brooks and his wife Honour (Fanny) but she came from Upton Bishop, Herefords, but have no maiden name for her.  Also have their daughter Hannah Berrow (or Barrow) Brooks reputedly born Gloucester City about 1822, then Ann (1828) Eliza (1830) and Charles junior (1833) all born in Monmouth for whom I have the baptisms.  Don't know if there were any in between, but no-one else on 1841 census.

Have looked in Mon and Hereford marriages but cannot find them.  Also cannot find baptism for this elder daughter Hannah.  In another census it says she was born in Herefordshire, never mind Gloucester! It's all good stuff though, keeps me busy!

Thanks for your help, Ann.  Regards, Brownie.

Hi my Great Great Grandfather Henry Brooks born 1826 his parents were Robert Lloyd and Elizabeth Bennet Brooks married 27th March 1826 St Johns Church, Bedminster, Bristol.  at present am obtaining a copy of their marriage record giving details of witnesses at wedding.  I believe that Charles Brooks and Elizabeth (surname unknown) was Elizabeth's Father and Mother.  Am keen to know more about the Brooks family of Bedminster area if anyone can shed any light on this family.  Thanks Karen.

An Elizabeth Bennett Brooks was baptized at Brislington in 1801. Not very likely that there would be two with exactly that name. Her parents were indeed Charles and Elizabeth.

There's only one Charles Brooks in the index of Bristol Diocese Marriages 1754-1812, and he married an Elizabeth in 1799, so it's very likely that's the right couple.

St. James', Bristol

Many thanks DRH123  for Elizabeth's parents information and their marriage information which does look like the right parents for Elizabeth Bennett Brooks.  Much appreciated.

Thanks Karen

How can i view the index of Bristol Diocese Marriages 1754-1812 for Charles Brooks and Elizabeth Williams.

The index can be bought on a CD from the Bristol & Avon FHS.

http://www.bafhs.org.uk/bafhs-shop/cdroms

£9 + pp. All marriages in the Bristol diocese for 60 years for much the same cost as a single marriage certificate from the GRO.  Or I see you can now download it for only £7.

However it is only an index, what I quoted is the entire entry for your marriage. Unless it's been transcribed elsewhere you can only see the full record at the Bristol RO, or I expect they would send you a photocopy for a small fee.  In most cases, the only information left out in the index is the names of the witnesses to the wedding. Sometimes they are relatives and give you a valuable clue, sometimes they're the church wardens and no help at all.

Hi,

Elizabeth Bennett Brooks now seems to be at

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=4427574

The FreeREG database is recompiled each month to incorporate new material and corrections. Presumably individual records can get new IDs in the process.

(You can search FreeREG yourself, as the name suggests it is completely free.  It is very fussy about the Christian name - it has to match exactly - so it's usually best to leave that blank. Just enter Brooks, Somerset, 1801 and choose baptisms: you'll get half a dozen matches, with Elizabeth as one of them.)
