Hi Nilu,
Welcome to RootsChat!
I wonder if these people may be able to help in your search for info
http://bombayrailway.blogspot.com/ Their site is basically for the history of the Bombay Railway and states -
"An attempt to document and archive relics of Asia's oldest railway network set up by the British more than a hundred and fifty years ago in India. A feast of old findings and artefacts for global railway heritage buffs. Rajendra Aklekar, Mumbai (+ 91- 9892 190 761) Also see http://www.brhg.4t.com/"
The group was set up by Rajendra Aklekar, an assistant editor with the English daily DNA in Mumbai, whose passion for railways gave way for the creation of The Bombay Railway History Group in 2002. If you can't contact him on the History site, you may be able to find a contact email address for him at the newspaper. There's an interesting article on him at http://www.theweekendleader.com/Culture/398/A-life-on-track.html (http://www.theweekendleader.com/Culture/398/A-life-on-track.html)
Hope that's of some use to you

hi Tony ,
thanks for the info. but it does not mention any links were i can find the list of europeans working in indian railways during that period
regards /nilu.

I haven't come across any links for the records you're searching for Nilu. I think you might have to do this the hard way and, either contact the journalist via his newspaper to see if he can help, or contact Indian Rail to see if they have an archive dept that may hold the information you're looking for.

hi Tony,
i have been making all possible efforts to trace the whereabouts about my ancestors . i even tried to be in contact with British Library in UK , but with no luck as it is too expensive to dig out info by hiring a agent.
please let me know if u find any additional information relating to my grandfather.
few more names in his family like hope ellis , vivian ellis , not sure if they are his (bro / sis)
thanks & regards
Nilu.

The service records, marriages and dob should be available at the British Library. Please send me a personal message with detail and I'll have a look next time I go, likely next month.

thanks a lot roger / will send you the details ASAP.

Hi Nilu
I took the liberty of emailing Indian Railways to see if they could help. Their reply is below
Thanks for mailing indianrailways
We are not able to help you in this matter.
You have to contact local railway office at Mumbai
to search for the details of person you want.
Regards
Help Desk
Centre For Railway Information Systems
(An Organization of the Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India)
Chanakyapuri,New Delhi
So it seems that the Mumbai/Bombay station is the one you need to contact regarding Clement Ellis. You should be able to find their email address on the net.

Thanks Tony for your support. will try to get in touch with the local railway office in mumbai ( bombay ) .

Nilu,
I've tried every which way to find an email address for CST Mumbai without success, so I tried the Mumbai forum on TripAdvisor. One of the guys on there suggested -
Write to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the concerned railway (Central Railway if he was working at CST) and he should be able to help you out if he wants to do so. You could always put in a request as a foreigner who cannot visit India to find out the details yourself.
I think, if you address your mail to "Public Relations Officer, Central Railway, CST Mumbai, Mumbai, India" you should, hopefully, get some results.
Hope that helps

hi tony,
i had requested one of my colleague who was on a trip to bombay to get in touch with the railway board there . and he contacted the public grivences officer over there but with no luck . what they require is a proof of his service in railways ,which i dnt have and its too difficult for them to search the records, reason being that its too old . there were two railway co in bombay before indian independence i.e Great Indian penensular Railway & Bombay Baroda and Central Railway.
as you said earlier i have also requested Mr Rajendra Aklekar if he could help me with my search , i found his email address on the Web as rail_india[at]yahoo.com
i also found the marriage of my Grandfather registered in familysearch.org. please find the details below
India Marriages, 1792-1948 for Clemont Ernest Ellis
6 Jan.1934 Jacob Circle, Bombay, India
Clemont Ernest Ellis, single, age 36, son of John Ellis
Lucy D'Souza, single, age 17, daughter of Marian D'Souza

Good to see that some results are coming through. Shame about the IndianRailways side, though it still may be worth a letter to the Public Relations Office in Mumbai.
Maybe you'll have more success with Rajendra Aklekar.
Good luck with your search
Tony

If you get nothing from Mr. Aklekar I am going to the BL in August.
