Title: Lost grandmother in AUL/Greaves/1861/1871
Post by: drakes on Sunday 01 May 05 16:20 BST (UK)
Hello,
I am trying to find Nicolas(Nicholas) Greaves/Grieves (female) who was residing in AUL in the 1881 census and in the 1851 cenus. IN 1851 & 1881  living with her daughter, Helen Ramsden, at 165 Park St. AUL, and in 1881 at 5 Lodge Street. Nicholas died in AUL in 1881 - after cenus taken.

1861 & 1871 census for Helen's family does not list Nicholas Greaves - she was born abt 1800 in Kirkcudbright, SCT. She would be abt 60 in 1861, and 70 in 1871 - any leads would be most appreciated!

regards,
 drakes

Hi Marilyn
I have drakes name, address and email address.  I will PM you.

I found Nicholas Baird for Drakes on the 1861 census with Elizabeth Ramsden, when she couldn't find her.  So have quite a file on her, although not related in any way, I enjoyed the search for her.

I have a copy of her marriage certificate to James Greaves if that is of any use to you?  Her father was Robert Cairns.  They came from Kirkcudbright.

Kind regards
Su

Please please please tell me you still check this site!!  I have been desperately searching for information on Helen Ramsden.  My mother-in-law is her great granddaughter and I've been trying to research her family for her since she knows almost nothing about them.  Anything you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, Helen had a daughter named Agnes Stewart Ramsden who married John S. Arnold.  They were my MIL's grandparents.

Thanks so much for your help.  I don't know if your information extends down through Helen's children, but if you have anything on her daughter Agnes I would really appreciate it.  I know that she married a man named John S. Arnold (I believe the S stands for Sibley) about 1885 and they had a daughter named Nellie or Helen about 1887.  They then immigrated to Pennsylvania and had several more children.  Nellie died at the age of 13 in 1900.

I can't seem to find much of anything on John Arnold.  I haven't been able to locate a marriage record for them or anything that would give me a hint as to where he came from other than he says his parents were born in Scotland and he was born in England (according to the 1900 census in Pennsylvania).  I also haven't found any records for Nellie either.

Thanks again!  This is awesome.

Alright - I'll keep a look out for it.  I really can't wait to see what you have, especially the photograph.  You have no idea what this will mean to my mother-in-law.

Thanks again.

Am excited too !  I certainly am not an expert with this site, and it has been most helpful in searching my ancestry.  After you log in look at the top of the page where it says Welcome back and next to your name you will see any notification of personal messages.  Click on there and you should see my message with my email addy.  If you would send me an email I can forward the photo and other info I have.  I am always glad to share any of my findings as I have also enjoyed information that others have shared with me.  Looking forward to hearing from you "cousin"  :)

How exciting for you both.  I remember vividly researching Nicholas Baird for Drakes.  It was before the 1841 went on line and fortunately I have all the Cheshire and Lancashire Census CDs, and actually plowed all the way through the Ashton under Lyne 1841 page by page until I found Nicholas and Helen.

Marilyn, are you still in touch with Deborah?  If so will you give her my love please.  Thank you

Su

Yes, Marilyn has been a wealth of information for me!  Unfortunately, there are a couple of brick walls that I've run into which were the same ones that "Drakes" was researching.  I wish I could contact her and find out if she ever had any luck finding a marriage certificate for John Arnold and Agnes Ramsden or a birth registration for their daughter Nellie.

Su,

Did you say you found Helen and Nicholas on the 1841 census?  I've not had any luck searching for Helen prior to the 1861 census.  She married William Ramsden around 1847 in Ashton Under Lyne and that's where they are in 1861, 1871, and 1881, but I've never found them in 1851 and have never found Helen prior to her marriage in 1841.  If you have anything I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi Su,

Thats a ditto for me too    ;D  !
Re : Drakes -  Sorry to say I have misplaced her contact info.  I was hoping you still had it as I believe she and Brenda would have a grand time since they have a direct link with John S Arnold.

All the best to you !

Actually, that would be Jane Gordon, born late 1849, early 1850 in Ashton Under Lyne.  Does the fact that is says unfilmed mean that it hasn't been transcribed into ancestry.com or FamilySearch?

Thank you very much!

Huckleberry !

Thanks so much. This is great!  Too bad the census was water damaged, but we can figure out the illegible items from what we already know. Entry for  Nicholas would be BAIRD, Nicholas (mother to Ellen b. 1824) unmarried at time of census, but remarried  7 Sept 1851.... This is probably why we have not been able to locate Nicholas since the surname is not legible.

Can't thank you enough.  Do you have this on a CD and if so how would we obtain a set?

Thank you both ,   MA
