I'd be very grateful if someone could check out the following information as I don't live near Sheffield.
I have a marriage certificate GRO vol 9c page 327 Oct-DEC 1855 Sheffield that states that George Storey's father is also called George Storey (a cordwainer). I have come across errors in certificates before now & as I cannot find a birth/baptism record for a George Storey born to a George Storey in Harthill (George Jr's birth place in every census record from 1851-1891) I wondered whether an error had occurred in this instance.
Thanks very much in anticipation. Brita

Fathers' details in marriage certificates are often wrong. Suspect a change of name or mother's remarriage or illegitimacy.
If I were you I would look at the marriage of Samuel MULLINS and Mary STOREY in the Worksop RD in March 1842 and look at Mary STOREY and children in the 1841 census for Harthill with Woodall.

Thanks very much. I'm sorry I should have said that George Storey Jr was consistently born 1828-1830.

But just because he was born in Harthill, it doesn't follow he was baptised there. Also, people can be very vague about where they were born, apart from the oddity of some areas where the parish name is different from the postal address. Don't know if that helps at all.

Is this the same George Storey, aged 12, living with sisters Julia, 15 and Sarah 7, with William Storey, 69 and Fanny Storey, 60 in Harthill with Woodall, in the 1841 Census - HO107, piece 1331, bk7? I take it William and Fanny are grandparents - and no sign of their parents.
Best wishes

I very much appreciate all the advice.
I've found a couple of George Storeys that could my husband's 2nd great grandfather but there's no way of telling for sure which might be the right one.
The only George b. Harthill was to Stephen (Nailer) & Jane in Apr 1830 but there was a George b. to Hannah Storey in Apr 1829 in Barlborough (just round the corner from Harthill). There don't appear to be any other George's in the locality at the right time.
I think that William & Fanny mentioned by derby girl may be Stephen's Uncle & William was a Cattle Salesman, at one stage, like our George so perhaps George is Stephen's son. Stephen seems to have had a brother called George & a George Storey is a witness to George Storey's & Sarah Shipstone's marriage. Perhaps this is where the mix up occurred. I can't find any marriage for George Snr.
Hannah, mother of the George b. 1829, was also born in Barlborough so, although her son was illegitimate he seems to have been baptised where he was born.
I'm thinking that Stephen & Jane may be the parents but I'm still not sure. Why would George be resident with his great uncle IF my research is correct? Any comments would be gratefully received.

Hi,
Im also working on this issue for my Uncles tree (his 2nd Gt Grandfather too) and have been trawling through all of the local Harthill records trying to piece together the Storey family, like you Im at a number of possible openings and was just about to send for the same Cert when I saw your post. Interestingly there are 2 George Storeys in the burial index both in the same vein...
06/12/1830 George STOREY 6m Harthill Son of Stephen and Jane
18/05/1834 George STOREY Harthill Son of Stephen and Jane
Still piecing together all the parish BMD data to see if it offers any other clues.
If its of any relevance I know the place well as Im from the next village...
Thanks

Hi Psychonaut1
My husband was born in Harthill.
The first George born to of Stephen & Jane Storey must have died before the 2nd one was born. The 2nd George is too young to have been my George.
I have the following thoughts on the 1841 census record of George indicating that he was the son of William & Fanny Storey. Fanny would have been 45/46 when she had George. That isn't impossible but fairly unusual. Sarah recorded as younger than George in the census, had granddaughter recorded against her record & crossed out & there is a baptism record saying that Sarah was Harriet's (William & Fanny's daughter) child.
I've looked in the Harthill baptism records on GENUKI Harthill & can find baptisms of other children, including Julia b. 1824 & Fanny b. 1828, born to William & Fanny, but not George. Fanny Snr (b. Retford 1781-1784) still having children in 1828 makes the birth of George in 1829/1830 to William & Fanny more acceptable.
The 1851 census records William as being born in Ulley c 1772 & I wonder whether George could have been baptised in Aston for some reason. Those baptism records aren't on line, that I know of.
If anyone has any relevant information or comments, including information about William's & Fanny's parents, I'd be very grateful for them.
Thanks for your help, Brita

I have now obtained William Storey's death certificate. It says that George Storey of Harthill was present at the death but, unfortunately, it doesn't say that George was William's son, but with this & the previous conclusions I've come to I will assume that George is William's son until it's proved otherwise. I hope this is of help to interested parties.
I also have Fanny Storey Snr's death certificate. A Benjamin Downs of Harthill was present at her death. I don't know who Benjamin Downs was.
