I am looking for information concerning Hugh Donachie who was born in Ireland about 1825 who was married to Catherine McLucky or McLuskie, who was also born in Ireland about 1825. Their daughter, Agnes Donachie married Arthur McGowan 2 Dec 1872 at St. Joseph's Chapel in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
-
Hi BrightonDCO,
Does the marriage certificate of Agnes give you her age and do you have her birth certificate were it may lead you back to her parents,
cheers,
Billy.
-
Hi Billy Anderson,
On the marriage document it states that Agnes was 21 and lists her parents as Hugh Donachie, coal miner and Catherine Donnachie, maiden name McLucky. The Donnachies lives at Mew Street and the McGowan's lived at Strand Street. I have looked in the Irish sites and can find no McLuckys. There are some in Scottish documents but I have not narrowed down which one she may be. Thanks for your question, I know that there must be others searching the same line.
-
Have you found Hugh and Catherine in any Scottish census records? did they have any other children besides Agnes?
-
I don't know if they had any children besides Agnes and so far I haven't found them in the censuses.
-
If you haven't found Hugh and Catherine in any census records where did you get their approx. ages from?
-
Aghadowey,
My cousin provided the birthdates to me. He obtained them from a website called WorldConnect but he indicated that he had not checked them yet.
-
In that case I would be very careful before using dates from an unknown source/someone else's estimate.

gnu,
Thank you very much. It seems that this is the correct Hugh Donnachie as his daughter, Agnes was born in 1851 and she would have been 9 at the time of the census. Also looking at the residence address, I can see that it is New Street not Mew Street. Thanks again for the information, I am now back another generation.

Hi again
According to Bernard's birth registration (11 May 1865, Kilmarnock), Hugh and Catherine married June 4th 1847, Kilmarnock. I don't see one so far though :-\

gnu,
Thank you again for the added information. I am not yet at the level of your expertise but someday I hope to be able to help others like you have helped me.

Greetings BrightonDCO,
My grandfather Bernard Donachy (b 1865) was the youngest son of the 9 children that Hugh Donachy had.
Hugh was the eldest of the 7 children born to Bernard Donachy and Agnes Shirkie (or Sharkey). They appear in the 1841 census as DONAGHLLY (two LL's); a surname that not appeared anywhere else although DONAGHLY (one L) has.
My thanks to Gnu for the Catholic marriage certificate. I did not think to try under Donchy!

DonHugo,
Do you have any information about Hugh Donnachie c1825 and/or Catherine McLusky's parents, such as DOB or where they were born?
-
Hugh Donachie parents:-
Father - Bernard Donachy (or Donaghlly)
b 1800-1806 in Derry, Ireland (Don't know if it is the county or the city but as he was an ag.lab. then I would guess the county). Information from 1841, 1851, and 1861 Census.
I have no information as to where, when or how he died.
Mother - Agnes Shirkie. I have no information about her birth or death. In the 1841 Census, Elinor Sharkey, age 50, is lodger. The wife, Agnes, is not listed in the 1841 Census. The youngest daughter's name is given as Catharine (with two a's)
Catherine McLuskie - I have no information about her parents other than he was a farmer.

Hello Don Hugo :)
Could you give refs or at least places for the 1841 - 1861 censuses, please.
Also see my posting re Catherine McLuskey:

Parents - Bernard McLuskey, farmer and Hannah, m.s. Rodgers, both deceased.

Greetings gnu,
For Hugh Donachy, b 1825
1841 Crosshouse, Kilmarnock parish, Ayrshire, GROS 598/00 002/00 005
1851 No. 2, Kilmarnock, GROS 597/00 006/00 016
1861 15 New Street, Kilmarnock, GROS 597/00 006/00 032.
He married 1847.
I realise that I only have the 1841 census for Hugh's father, Barney. I don't know why - the information may be in mass of unfiled data.
Don Hugo
-
Thank you. It was Bernard Donachy that I was interested in as I've got the info for Hugh.
I'll have a furtle around for him this afternoon.
gnu
-
Do you have a death for Barney/Bernard - Hugh's father? I can't find him on SP so assume he must have died before 1855.
gnu
-
My family tree schematic shows his death as 'aftr 1861 ??'. This was based on the marriage cert of his youngest daughter Catherine to John Murphy in Kilmarnock, 1860, GROS 597/00 0133.

Don Hugo,
You asked previously if I knew anything of any of Hugh Donnachie's children. His son, John Donahue emigrated to the US. He is on the 1900 Census at Ward 27, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. Also listed are his wife Catherine (born Scotland); children-Hugh (Scotland); John (Scotland); Mary (Scotland); Catherine (Pennsylvania); Agnes (Pennsylvania); Josephine (Ohio) and Anna (Ohio). Agnes married Ed Rumplik and they had 5 children. If you want you can send me a PM and I can provide more information.
-
Don Hugo,
A little more information on John Donnachie or John Donahue. He married Catherine Toye in St Margaret's RC Church, on 25 Apr 1883.
-
BrightonDCO, many thanks for the info, especially about his marriage to Catherine Toye.
I have been told their daughter Jo married Ed(?) Holicky.
Will PM you.
-
GNU,
I have just obtained the marriage document for Hugh and Catherine and he was born in County Derry and not County Donegal. I obtained the document through Scotland's People and the document is MP 56 1 4 1 11. I just didn't want you too have the wrong info. Thanks.
