Presumably he applied via the naturalisation process

His father/parents are British? He takes nationality of father?

What was his father's occupation? Was he in the forces?

Does your ggrandfather appear on the census with his parents and siblings? If so you may be able to trace the movements of the family looking at birth places of the children.

Hi there,

If your chap's parents were British Subjects, (or at least his father was), then he was a British Subject by virtue of that.  His parents would have lodged details with the British Consul in Paris etc to confirm it.   The British Empire's realms of influence were vast.

There's been several threads, so I will be back shortly with some links

This one has links within it

I would like to thank all the people who has replied to me I found my great grand father in the 1881 census ; in LIVERPOOL . That is how I found out about him been a BRITISH SUBJECT  . MY late Father always said that his Grandfather HENRY HOSIER was born in FRANCE and that HOSIER was a FRENCH name.On my GREAT Grand Fathers Marriage Certificate it reads that he was a BRITISH SUBJECT and his Father was George HOSIER his occupation was a BRICKLAYER ; HENRY HOSIER married my great grand mother MARY WARD in LIVERPOOL 1883 . I do not know anything about his Father GEORGE HOSIER if he was born in FRANCE or served in any off armed forces . Once again thank you for your replies AMANDA ???
