Title: Buxton Fam connection needed
Post by: rpoole on Monday 11 July 11 13:27 BST (UK)
Hello all, I am seeking a connection between Thomas Buckston of Royal Marines who fought at the battle of Culloden, died 1811 Uxotter and Thomas Buxton bap 1791 Mayfield, Derbyshire, died 1865 Hobart, Australia. He was son of John Buxton and Sarah (Bond) who are both buried in the Mayfield cemetery.

I have all info I need except for the connection between John Buxton and Thomas Buckston of the Royal Marines.  I know they are connected because of the story in this link where my GGG Uncle Thomas Buxton Jnr who died NZ in 1900 had a piece of tartan from Charles Stuart's bed handed down to him.  (Scroll down article to find section on this matter)

Hoping someone has the info required,

Cheers,

Aussie Bob

Hello,

Are you aware of a transcript of a letter 23.12.1758 from Thomas Buckston to his sister, written
at Gibralta.  It appears in the Times Newspaper 18th October 1926.  After the transcript appears
a P S which includes the following information:-

Captain Thomas Buckston lived to old age, and was buried in Bradbourne Church Derbyshire, under
the following inscription:-
In memory of Thomas Buckston Esq., who died in the year 1811 aged 87.  Many years Captain in the royal Marines, during which period her served in many engagements, and lived to be one of the oldest
officers in his Majesty's service.  he was formerly a lieutenant in the 30th Regiment of foot, and was at the battle of Culloden.  A man warmly attached to his family and friends, charitable and religious in his principles and conduct.  Elizabeth his wife died 27th August 1810 aged 75.

The letter of 1758 was addressed to his sister Miss E. Buckston At Mrs Brownes in Derby.

The information was supplied to The Times Newspaper in 1926 by George Buck, Wimpole-Street, London
who states that the letter 1758 was addressed to the house of Buckston's Sister Mrs. Browne
who was the Great Great grandmother of George Buck.

Think you are only going to discover a connection by following the families backwards.

Both Mayfield and Bradbourne are near to Ashbourne Derbyshire.

Thanks for that Spendlove, I had seen his memorial transcription, but had not been aware of his letters.   I have all his siblings and ancestors but cannot make that connection to my lot. I also have his will.  His sister married Theophilus Browne who was an associate of Charles Darwin's dad.
I had have gone through all the parish records for both Stafford and Derbyshire on IGI to no avail.  I suspect a few are missing.
There were so many Buxtons in Derbyshire.

Aussie Bob

Hi Bob

The Nat Lib of Australia seems to have Thomas Buxton down as 1780-1865 but you say 1791-1865
http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/38072415?q=%22Thomas+Buxton%22&c=map

You say that his parents were John and Sarah (Bond) and I see that they married in 1790. Do you have John's parents?

As you say, the name Buxton is pretty common but the time frame is pretty limited so it should be a solvable problem ;D

Hi Gardener, I have only got his baptism date which was 4/7/1791 so he may have been 11 when baptised, however records show he was 75 when he died in 1865. I had seen the plan of Mayfield but took no notice of the birth date on it.  I beleive that Edmund BUXTON bap 26/1/1731 (igi batch 7825630) at Ashbourne, was  John BUXTON'S father as John was baptised 4/1/1762 Ashbourne, to Edmund and Eliz.  The date fits and Edmund and both his wives are buried in the Mayfield cemetery where Thomas was bapised and John and Sarah are buried. Given there are batches not on the igi index (such as the batch I have just mentioned) but exist anyhow, it is very hard to trace such a large family.  Unless I am not doing it properly.

If someone can advise me where I might find all the indexes I would be most grateful.

Cheers, Aussie Bob

Hi Aussie Bob

I'm pretty sure that you will have tried anything that I might think of  :) Still, just in case, have you looked at Thomas Buxton/Buckston's will? I just wondered if he passed the scrap(s) of material on then... too handy to be true no doubt. In any case it would be good to see who got a mention.

I tried making a time line. Your Thomas went to Tasmania in 1821, with the tartan? He was born in about 1791 so he certainly acquired the tartan after that date, either a gift or a bequest. Cullodon was in 1746 so if Thomas Buckston gave the tartan away (rather than leaving it in his will) then it was probably to the generation before Thomas Buxton, don't you think?

I'm trying to imagine, if I had a strip of cloth, decided to cut it up and give it to family and friends, then who would I give it to? Siblings and cousins most likely. So the people mentioned in his will would be interesting. You can buy it online at
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ebs/ , if you don't already have it.

The best list that I know of for parish records in Derbyshire is the one at the Archives here
http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/our_collection/default.asp (scroll right down for the link to a pdf). Mayfield you have already looked at. That would be Staffordshire so the parish records would be here http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/home.aspx

As you say, there is a lot not in the IGI. You probably know of this site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/ which indexes the submitted entries in the IGI, by county and parish.

If you haven't already seen it then http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/MENU.htm has a section called Ince's pedigrees. It is not the most user-friendly index but sometimes it leads to gold. It is based on the notes made by a lawyer 1826-1860.

Looking at that, it seems to me that Edmund Buxton as a name has some connections to Fenny Bentley and that is not included in the IGi (except for a few years). Other than that, nothing really jumped out but I didn't look at every single tree  :o

I'm not sure how realistic it would be to go through all the parish records for the area!

I hope that some of this is useful.

See now that you have Thomas Buckston's will. So no pointers there then, sorry.

Hi Gardener,

Thomas Buckston, not having issue of his own, left everything to his siblings, nieces, nephews and their children. No mention of cloth.  Handwriting in the will is very hard to read.  Nothing in it seems to give a lead to Edmund. Thank you for the links, a few more late nights coming up for me.   ::)

Hi

I live in the Ashbourne area and would be happy to try and help out - looking for gravestones etc.

I know that the local registrar in Ashbourne has local records that I can look up if you have some specifics you want to check.

Let me know iof I can help

Hi Hanbsa23,

I am afraid I do not have any specifics at this stage.  My task is to connect Capt Thomas Buckston (whose name was changed from Buxton in the early 1700s) with my ggggg grandfather Edmund Buxton.  (Details of these two are in my previous posts.)   I know they are connected, but finding that connection is proving difficult.  if I do have a specific look-up I will let you know.  Many thanks for your offer and any help is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Aussie Bob

Hullo, I am interested in your posts since my Buxton family come from Fenny Bentley and there are several Edmund Buxtons in my lot.
Since it is some time since you posted this I wondered how you got on with your quest? While you think about that I will be looking at whether I can link my lot to your lot.
My link so far is Samuel Buxton of Manchester, a builder, who seems to be the son of Edmund Buxton, born 1722 in Fenny Bentley.  I need to do more work here, but Samuel had an interesting life, and I wonder if he is related to your lot?

Hi Dahlia, No, unfortunately I have not made much progress in connecting the Bradbourne, Ellastone, or Fenny Bentley Buxtons with my lot which are spread around the Mayfield, ashbourne & Tissington areas.    The Ellastone Buxtons had a few who migrated to NZ and lived in Christchurch which is where my Thomas Buxton Jnr raised a family, yet I cannot connect them.  Most details are on previous posts on this list, so I will not duplicate them.   If you do make a connection with any of these "Tribes" I would appreciate it.  There are just too many Buxtons in the Derbyshire/Staffordshire area and records rarely reveal their connections.  ::)
Best of luck, Bob
