I am researching George Comer and Mary Ann Rumsom Comer who came to NZ with their 3 eldest children in 1884 on the Doric from Portsmouth Eng. George was a miner and went to Thames to work for his brother Robert. Any info on George and his family would be appreciated.

Hello...and welcome to Rootschat :-)
Do you have any ages? There is a George and Mary Ann COMER buried at Waikaraka Cemetery (http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/cemeteries/cemetery.html) in Auckland.
The inscription reads ""In Loving Memory Of Mary Ann Dearly Beloved Wife Of George Comer, Died 11 July 1920 Aged 66 Yrs Also George Comer, Died 23 July 1928 Aged 74"
Also, here is a link to (possibly) his brother's death notice

Hi again,
You may want to visit the following website.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/
It's possible that George and Mary Ann had another eight children after they arrived in NZ.
This website can help you make up a framework of the children's marriages and deaths, if they occured in NZ. Plus any grandchildren that turned up before July 1911 which marks the 100 year privacy cut-off.

Is George who was born Devon 1854?If so there are Articles written by A M Isdale on Robert and George Comer and their mining career.
copies at The Treasury, Thames and Library.
There will be probably be pioneer forms also at The Treasury for this family. And early Thames books will have many refs.
It will really be what sort of info that you want...

I am researching George Comer and Mary Ann Rumsom Comer who came to NZ with their 3 eldest children in 1884 on the Doric from Portsmouth Eng.
Hi again...
How accurate is your info as regards George and Mary's 1884 arrival aboard the Doric.
I ask because the BDM Historical website I mentioned earlier has a listing for a Verney COMER born to a George and Mary Ann COMER in 1882 (BDM NZ 1882/14172 - Verney COMER born 4 Oct 1882)
Could there have been two George and Mary Ann COMER's in NZ c.1880's

The George who came to Thames and was brother of Robert - came to NZ 1884c
apparently in his obituary it says in NZ 45 years
and confirmed in the A M Isdlae article mentioned above.

Thats interesting Janette
must check the hotel lists
I usually just associate him with mining, he has a very well documented career
Will be interested when original poster comes online, what children they have
BMD have Registration Number Family Name Given Name(s) Mother's Given
Name(s) Father's Given
Name(s) Still Birth
1885/6102 Comer Leonnard Rumsam Mary Ann George -
1886/19475 Comer John Mary Ann George -
1882/14172 Comer Verney Mary Ann George
this fits in with a school admission that has Virney and Flora..name of a child born Devon in census mention above
Bye
althea
Meant to add George is in the 1900s is on the Licensing Committee at Thames
-
George and Mary Ann are buried at Waikaraka Cemetary. I didn't know the grave was marked, will have to visit when next in Auckland.
-
Thanks Janette, I have never found a listing for any of them coming into the country. I am surprised that the 3 children are not listed ie. George, Flora Jane and Virney.
-
Was Virney born in Devon? or aboard ship, because the registration is at BMD
school record gives Bdate as 3 oct 1882

COMER Verney, born 4 October 1882, Huranui, Thames, NZ, son of George Comer, miner,
The HURANUI will be a transcript error at the time and will be KURANUI, Tararu, fitting in with other residence references.
So the family were defintely here by October 1882, don't rule out the possibility they went home and back again!! I have one set of rellies that did in the space of two years
The hotel ref is interesting in 1883, hotel licensing information has the "official" licensee as Robert Comer..so did brother George, step in for awhile at the Shotover Hotel.

According to the Auckland City Library there was a George Comer arrived in Auckland in Jan 1880, cant find any other info. The Comers that arrived in 1884 on the Doric are not the Comers that I have a connection with.

Hello...
Just wondering if you're NZ-based.
If not, I'm reasonably sure I've got the contact details for one of George and Mary Ann's ggg-son's through Virney's line (Virney b.1882). He may not be interested in his family history but he may know of someone within his extended family who is.
But if you are NZ-based, and known as the family historian, then there's a fairly good chance he'll just re-direct you back to yourself. It has happened before :-)
Happy to PM details if you want. But totally understand if you'd prefer to steer clear of living relatives for the moment.
Regards

Hello Althea,
How do you access the trees. Is it for subscribers only or can I access them at my local library.
Thanks
Beg
-
Hi BEg
I thinkkkk you can see the trees via the library edition, just not sure if you can send messages
If you sign in as a guest at home you will see basic index. You can search by just public or private trees
If you have never belonged you can usually get a free 14 day trial

Just heard back from the person who keeps track of the Pioneer family project
There are 3 pioneer family forms for this family at The Treasury, Thames
so plenty of family contacts if you want them to complete details down to present day descendants
Info on the project 1/2 way down page
http://www.thetreasury.org.nz/Resources.htm
A good time to remind anyone with early settlers pre 1900 to the Thames/Coromandel Peninsula area
a form is available on this page
The Coromandel Heritage trust would love your help to build up a picture of all early settlers
