Title: Maude Jones Quigley
Post by: SherryQ on Sunday 10 July 11 18:54 BST (UK)
My Grandmother Maude Jones was born in Canada abt 1889. She married my Grandfather Frank Quigley 1904. They moved to California within the time to have my Dad Earl Quigley 1930. Supposedly Maude died about 1937. I can find no info on her birth or death. Frank died in 1954, buried in Seattle. My Father has passed also. So no one is left to fill in the questions. Story has it Maude was a orphan. So sad she has no history. Any suggestions?

Hi SherryQ:

Welcome to RootsChat.

Could this be the couple in 1930 (ages are incorrect, though)?
1930 Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA (April 4, 1930)
Frank E Quigley, age 41, married at age 35, born Iowa, father born United States, mother born France, Cook - Hotel; U.S. veteran
Maude Quigley, age 31, married at age 25, [cannot read her birthplace-looks like Colorado, crossed off, with something written above], father born Canada F(?) (Quebec), mother born Canada E?(other than Quebec) [my computer screen isn't very clear - they may both be F]
Lived on Crescent Avenue, No. 226

I'm sorry, I can't find anything for your Maude.  Is there a chance that the couple I found could be your couple?  :-\

Thank you Lisa. so happy to see proof Frank was in Canada. I had seen 1930 census. I did not understand why Colorado was crossed out, maybe the person taking the census misunderstood her. The army registration is him though. Thank you. If she was orphaned any suggestions finding her?

Have you checked the 1901 (Canadian) census?  I didn't yet, as I was unsure of her year of birth.

Since it appears the information I posted was for your couple, I will continue to look around for more information.  If we can find her date and place of death, perhaps we can learn more about her birth and possibly her parents.

I do have to leave for a bit, but I will check back here in an hour or so.

It looks like Frank was living in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa in 1900 with his mother, Mary J Quigley, and sister, Catherine (as well as with other siblings).  Mary was widowed.

This time, it is stated that he was born in December 1887.

You may already have this information, but I'm hoping somewhere along the line, I'll find a clue that will lead us to Maude.

Hi,

I'm not sure what to make of this, but I thought I'd throw it out.

A Frank E. Quigley marries a Anolda Bertina Iverson July 11, 1910 in Vancouver, states he was born Iowa & parents are Wm. C. Quigley & Mary J Headdy.

Margaret Byrde (perhaps Birdie on the 1900 USA census?) marries an Alfred Timmins Apr. 19 1902 Iowa, her parents are the same as above.

1910 census for Albia (same as attestation papers?) Ward Monroe Iowa:
A Mary J & Lillian G. Quigley are living with Alfred & Bidela (maybe Birdie?) Timonds, Mary J. is listed as mother in law & Lillian as sister in law

This is all from the familysearch.org site.

Cordially,
Lisa

Hi Lisa:

Thank you so much.  I did see the Iverson marriage on another site, but it was only an index (so there weren't any details).
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0e89/

From researching a bit today, it appears that Frank's parents were William C Quigley and Mary Jane Heady.

Thank you again for your help.  :)

Taking another look at the British Columbia site, Anolda Bertina Quigley married John Benard Peters in 1920.

There is more information about Anolda.  She was living in Seattle, Washington in 1909.  Since you are looking for Maude, I will not add the additional information, unless you would like it.

There is a border crossing from the US to Canada at Huntingdon, BC for Mrs. F.E. Quigley, 25, wife, b. Minn(?), USA.  Travelling from Tacoma, WA to her husband in Edmonton.  Crossing June 17, 1914.
In the 1914 Edmonton directory found at the site below a Frank E. Quigley is a cook at the Quill Cafe and residing 212 Rudyk Blk.  I can't see him in the 1915 directory but he did sign up for WWI in Edmonton.

I really appreciate your help. I found that Frank and Anolda were married 7/11/1910. Also a child named Quigley, Quigley was born to them in Seattle 4/13/1909. So now I am REALLY confused. I have searched for divorce papers, found none. But Anolda married a John Bernard Peters 12/14/1920 in Vancouver. I also looked for death records on Quigley, Quigley nothing. I think a lot of secrets, but I wonder if there is a Uncle now?

Hi,

Maybe they were married a little later than 1904?
Venture a guess on where they were married?
If they married in Alberta it will be a tough search unless you have the exact date.

I don't know if this is him or not but there is a small blurb in the March 10?, 1909 Edmonton Bulletin about J. Quigley returning home from Seattle from visiting his wife that was in hospital there.
I found this through The Resents which hyper-linked me to the newspaper article at ourfutureourpast.ca

Thank you for ALL the suggestions on Maude and Frank. Debbie I believe the Mrs. F.E. Quigley is his 1st wife Anolda. We never knew of her, but I really think it is true. Seeing a baby born in Seattle 4/13/1909, and then Frank traveled to Seattle to see the wife. Then she traveled back to Canada in 1914. Where Maude fits in will be hopefully in the my future. Again thank you very much.

The 1930 Long Beach census, with Frank E. Quigley, age 41 and Maude Quigley, age 31, states Frank was married at age 35 and Maude was age 25.

Maybe they were married in 1924 rather than 1904?

Kathryn/Catherine Manning (Frank's sister) was living in Ottumwa c1915, according to Frank's attestation papers.

Oddly enough, (Infant) Quigley, was born July 8, 1909 and died July 22, 1909.  He was buried in Ottumwa Cemetery and may be the only Quigley buried there.  This infant didn't have the same dob as Quigley Quigley, but they do share the same year.  :-\

If you type Quigley, the only recorded death in that cemetery for Quigley is for the infant.

Checking familysearch website, the infant's parents were Geo Quigley and Jesse Barker.

Hi Lisa. I wanted to ask for your opinion. I started thinking about Franks sign up into the Canadian Army. I took his sisters name Katherine Manning (from the form) and did a search on it, I found 1920 census in Iowa. I then looked at neighbors, Eliza Foster had a maid Maude Jones, DOB 1897 age 23. She put place of birth Iowa, parents born United States of America. Do you think this could be my Maude Jones? I could not find any other Maudes born that year in Iowa. Probably a needle in a haystack. What would you think? Thank you for brain storming with me.

The 1937 Pasadena, California city directory have Frank E. and Maude Quigley living at 2401 Oneida, but they don't appear to be in the 1938 directory.

Do you have an obituary for Frank?  Occasionally, they will list information about the late spouse or give a marriage date.

Hi SherryQ:

I didn't notice a Maude living next door to his sister.  (I do tend to look at neighbours, but didn't think of it this time.)  While I'm not too sure it is her, it is certainly something to keep in mind.  However, this Maude was single, and I really think your Maude married Frank c1924, like the 1930 census states.

I still feel like there is more to be found.  With others helping with this topic, perhaps someone might find a clue.

PS  You mentioned they were married in 1904.  Where did you get this information?  :-\

This was the 1920 census. Four years before Frank and Maude married. If I did mention 1904 marriage that was a mistake. I really think he married Anolda Iverson in 1910, baby was born in 1909. When he enlisted in Canadian Army 1915 he said wife's address unknown, probably he and Anolda had separated. Possibly he met Maude when visiting his sister. I do not have Frank's obit. How do I obtain it? Do I contact Seattle library s?

You could try contacting the library, to see if they might be able to find an obituary.

I was having another look around, and looking at the California death index:
John Bernard Peters, born September 1, 1896, died May 11, 1986, Los Angeles.  His mother's maiden name was Beneke.
He was born in Iowa.  :-\

PS  Where is Frank in 1920?

Maud is elusive without more information...
Did you have the parents William Charles Quigley and Matie Heady in 1881?
 http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_7752577
Lora Lyle? a daughter from a previous marriage?

The new FHS site surely is backwards with dates left out unless you ask for the right data
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0eda/
https://www.familysearch.org/search/records#count=20&query=%2Bfather_surname%3Aquigly~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Aheady~  pedigree resource files at bottom...submissions for Frank's family, 6 siblings are named.

You likely have everything there, but posted what comes up in searches...

I have looked for Frank in Edmonton, as he's there 1909 and also at signup.
Here is a rootschatter who will do Edmonton searches...Maybe something else might turn up...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,421859.0.html
Make sure they know you have directory info for 1913/14, and the one account of the first wif'es health in 1909
The Pedigree file in above link says he was found in Edmonton 1913. I wonder what resource had
this information, unless they missread the attestation papers, which I am pretty sure say 1915.

Having read the thread through twice, I can't see where it says that Maud Jones was born in Canada, nor when the surname Jones was found. Can we see a snippett of the 1930, just only her line of the image?

When Frank crossed the border from Canada to the US in 1923 at Sweet Grass he indicated that he had been in the US between 1887 and 1914.  His contact in Canada was his friend Bert Berg in Edmonton.  He was going to another friend in Sheby Montana - Albert R. Berle(?).

Bert Berg in on the 1916 Canadian Prairie census at 11024 108 Ave. Edmonton.  He was born in the US, immigrated in 1914, 28 years old (b. 1888) and occupation was waiter.  He was married to Flora (27) also born in the US, immigrated 1914 and occupation waitress.

Bert can be found in the 1915 Edmonton Directory at the above listed address.
1921 he is a waiter at Lewis Bros and residing at 10559 96 St.
1922 he is at the same address but working at the Shasta Cafe and his wife is employed at the Traymore Cafe.  He is not in the directories after 1923.  Perhaps Frank was boarding with Bert and his wife and that is the reason he doesn't appear in the city directories??

1930 US census for Los Alamitos, Orange County, California
Birt Berg (42) b. Ill and wife Flora (42) b. N. Carolina own a restaurant.  They married at age 24.

Ancestry is not cooperating and won't let me save an image at the moment so unfortunately I can't provide the image that JJ requested.  Frank's birth state is Iowa and his father US and mother France as previously indicated.  Maude (31) shows Colorado as her place of birth.  Colorado has been crossed off but it's the same word printed above it.  She indicates that both parents were born in Canada E - therefore Quebec.

No problem then, Debbie, as I'd thought there was something needing deciphering, but it sounds clear..
So Maud was born closer to 1899 than to 1889....so the original query isn't worded correctly, sorry .
It can be modified using the modify button, that she was born c.1899 and place of birth may also be U.S.

So far am not seeing any young couples in 1900 that are both born Quebec, so census may not have correct information at all if she lost her parents as a young gal, and couldn't remember details...Wish the marriage details could be found.... J.J.

Hi Lisa. I wanted to let you know I found my Grandmother Maude Jones Quigley. I was determined to find her, and I finally did. She died April 14, 1937 in Los Angeles. I have already received her death certificate, and found her grave. A volunteer at find a grave has taken and posted a picture for me. Alot of answers came along with finding her, it is a good feeling. Thank you for being part of my journey to meet her. I hope 2012 is a good year for you. Sherry
