Title: Birth certs info
Post by: mommabear on Saturday 09 July 11 08:42 BST (UK)
I have just received through the post a birth certificate. It is for my adopted sons brother, I am collecting sibling Certs for later on in his life. He is too little to understand as yet but am trying to be prepared.

I have found that there is hardly any info on it. Let me explain.

It has child's name, mums name, where born, this case was in ambulance. As a social worker registered the child they will have documentation now.  What happens in the future when, like us, others are trying to trace relatives. My son is lucky as I will leave him all I know but for others it will be a brick wall.

I know when the said child is adopted the cert differs, I.e. Name changes etc. I have not had to as yet ever look up any adoption details.

Have others found this a problem in the past

Sounds like you are creating a life story book for your son, which is used a lot nowadays in social work for children who are being adopted or have been in foster care.

I think that information is a lot harder to gather for adoptions which happened a long time ago as I imagine the system was different. My understanding of the way in which adoptee's can now gather information about their birth family is that they now have to go to an approved agent who finds their file and writes to the birth family, if both parties are in agreement then they can write/meet up etc.

Quite rightly (in my opinion) to avoid disruption to the adoptive placement access to information about adopted children and likewise birth families is restricted.

I think what you are doing is a fantastic idea, I hope your son will appreciate all the work that you've put in to it.
