Title: Laidlaw Family Tree, 1738 - 1904, compiled by Helen Douglas Scott
Post by: Lyn47c on Saturday 09 July 11 04:28 BST (UK)
I'm wondering how many Laidlaw researchers have this tree? I have been trying to up date it. BIG IDEA! I updated my little corner in 1982 and it was as large a tree as the main tree. This tree originates with James Laidlaw(b-1738 Roxburghshire, SCT) & Margaret Scott with 5 sons & 2 daughters.  Who else has added to their line?

Don't know where to get that tree but would be interested to see it.

No idea if this connects to your Laidlaws somehow.

From my tree..

Barbara Laidlaw married James Swanston 9 Jun 1843 Mertoun

Dear Lyn

Just seen your message.  I have Laidlaws from Roxburghshire in my tree, specifically a James Laidlaw born about 1801, who moved to Sunderland and married a girl from Cheshire called Hannah Aloes.

Where can I get hold of the Laidlaw tree you mention, please?

thanks
Judi

Hi,
I doubt a tree is available.  The trees a re probably just in the hands of descendants.
I can't find your James 1801 on my tree but there's a James son of a James b-1771 to James Laidlaw and Margaret Scott.  The date of his birth would be close to your James.  My ancestor was William Laidlaw b- 1768 to James & Margaret. The tree mainly follows his line .

Hello,
I just saw this post.  I have an original copy of this family tree.  My great-great grandparents were William and Christian Laidlaw Gowanlock.  My great grandparents were Adam and Sarah Ellis Gowanlock. My grandmother was their daughter, noted as Bella on the tree.  It is a large document, approximately 25 x 21.  My parents gave me the tree about 50 years ago.  It is fascinating to look at.

I think you missed a generation DCampbell.  William & Christina Laidlaw Gowanlock, Robert & Jane   Armstrong Gowanlock then Adam & Sarah Ann Ellis Gowanlock.

Yes, you are correct.  Thank you so much.  I have always wondered how many copies there may be of the Laidlaw family tree compiled by Helen Douglass Scott.  My copy looks as though it was drawn by hand--it is quite lovely.

Thank you.  I live in Michigan.  My copy came from my grandmother, Edith Isobel Gowanlock Dankert (shown as Bella on the tree) then to my father (Donald Dankert).  Her sister, my Aunt May, lived in Walkerton.  My grandmother raised her family in Hanover.  My sister and I will be going to Hanover cemetery to visit the Gowanlocks and Dankerts there. I will have to look into a subscription at Ancestry.

My great aunt, Mary Elizabeth Ada Rowand, had a copy, my Mother, Margaret Alice Rowand Twigg, then had it & now I do.  I'm on ancestry.ca & have found quite a few 3rd - 4th cousins.
On the tree is Christian Laidlaw, Elizabeth Oliver Gowanlock, James Oliver Rowand, Clarence Harold Rowand & his sister, Mary Elizabeth Ada Rowand [Lizzie] & so forth.

Not sure if this chat is still active or not, but here it goes.  Am part of the Laidlaw clan in Delaware County, New York.  I have been able to trace the Laidlaw's back as far as 1659, Thomas Laidlaw was married to Marie Bruce per the Scotland's People web site, am not sure of the accuracy of this connection.  Interested in any comments

Unlike Ancestry, MyHeritage and 1001 commercial genealogy web sites, Scotland's People has only original records. Nothing else. There are no fanciful or error-laden family trees or fantasy genealogies there.

Therefore if you have found in the index at SP a marriage between Thomas Laidlaw and Marie Bruce, you can immediately view the original document. No need to worry about whether it is or is not accurate.

The drawback is that the further back you go, the more gaps there are in the surviving records. So just because there is only one possible candidate in the records does not automatically mean that it is the right person.

Whether or not this Laidlaw-Bruce marriage connects with your family is an entirely different question. If you have solid evidence for every step in that long trail, well and good. If not, then it's probably pointless to speculate.

Thank you for your reply and I am not sure if this is the correct line, but I am still looking.
