Title: Duncan Travers
Post by: DuncanFauvel on Wednesday 06 July 11 10:06 BST (UK)
Hello All,
I am looking for information on a Duncan Travers, who is listed in the 1881 census as living on the Portobello Road, London, and listed in the same census as born in Inverness/Invernesshire. He was at that time also married to an Isabella, with four children - Edith H., Charles D., Beatrice and Horace B. His profession is listed as Clicker (Boot).
However, prior to 1881 I am unable to find any record of him atall. Any ideas?
Thanks guys,
Duncan

Think I've found him in 1871 listed as Duncan Traves, born Scotland, married to Isabella on findmypast.

Could you give his age on both census?

31 in 1871 and 41 in 1881. Birth year is listed as circa 1840.

Think he must've married Isabella in 1870

Name: Duncan Travers
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1870
Registration district: Westminster
Inferred County: London
Volume Number: 1a

They were approx 17 and 30 when they married, which sort of suggests he might have been married previously or possibly away at sea or something for the previous censuses? His son was listed as a sailor at one point later, think it was 1901, so could be a clue as to what Duncan was up to. Still doesn't explain the lack of information in earlier censuses when he would have been growing up.

bingo, found a tree that matches on ancestry. apparently Isabella's surname was Frewin, and Duncan's father's name was Lachlan. marriage matches (1870) on the tree also..

Although it now seems as though records of a Lachlan are sketchy to non-existant.  Really need to find an earlier census record of birth for Duncan.

It's a complete mystery. Perhaps they missed him? or maybe lied about his details? Thank you for trying!
