Post by: r_hanger on Tuesday 05 July 11 08:24 BST (UK)
Are there any records for doctors in 1800's in Ilminster. ?
Looking for William FRANCIS b Ilminster 1809 son of Richard Francis also a surgeon.

On 1841 census William is married with two children. Surgeon.
In 1852 he marries in Poole Dorset and states he is a batchelor

On the 1851 census, William is unmarried.
1841 census does not show Condition, so how do you know he was married?! ;D

Oh! And he was born in Ilchester, not Ilminster?

Reference HO107, Piece 1930, Folio 515, Page 20
Market Place, Ilchester

Francis, William  Head  Unmarried  M  42  LWSA Lond MRCS Lond In General Practice  b Ilchester
Pitman, Ann  Servant  F  46
Miller, John  Servant  M  15

1841 census says:
Reference HO107, 960, 1/9, 11
Church Street, Ilchester

Francis, William  M  30  Surgeon
Francis, Eleanor  F  20        Not born in County
Francis, Eleanor  F  1          Foreign
Francis, unknown  F  2 days
Rapson, Jane  F  20  F.S. (Female Servant)
Sibley, Sarah  F  15  F.S.
Noble, James  M  19  Apprentice Surgeon
Taylor, Sarah  F  50  F.S.                           all born in county, except where shown

Eleanor could be his sister? cousin?

I tried to follow Eleanor through the census returns - trying to find her father?

The younger Eleanor was born in France, British Subject
Her sister was named Editha.

Both are at a school in Church Street, Ilchester in 1851. (HO107, 1930, 515, 20).
By 1861, Eleanor is married to Joseph Whitby, and Editha is a visitor, in Church Street, Yeovil (RG09, 1643, 22, 37)

No sign of them in 1871?

Editha registered December qtr 1842, Yeovil district?
A Margaret Wyllie Francis was registered September qtr 1841, Yeovil.
Margarey Wyllie Francis died March qtr 1842.

I wonder if William FRANCIS is the son of Richard FRANCIS, Surgeon and Apothecary of Ilchester, Somerset and Mary ENSOR of Dorset, England?

I'm tracing the ancestry of Richard FRANCIS who resided in Quebec, Canada by 1831, the son of Richard FRANCIS of Ilchester, Somerset and Mary ENSOR from Dorset, England.  The FRANCIS family is said to have originally come from St. Austell, Cornwall.

Thanks kindly.

Cheers,

Talk about coincidence - I have just found this thread and realise that it is the same family as the thread about Eleanor Martha Francis, which I started just a few days later.

Unfortunately for some reason I am unable to copy the URL of the other thread to here - I get a dialog box telling me I can only post my own transcriptions! (I have news for the un-co-operative software - it IS my own work - or at least the first message is!)

I am pretty sure that the younger Eleanor, Margaret Wyllie and Editha are the daughters of William Francis' brother John by his wife Eleanor Martha Wyllie, who died in 1845. However I can only find John in one census, the 1851. (He isn't the one in Market Harborough in 1841, because that one was still there in 1851, and he was born in Kent.)

Eleanor Jr died in Yeovil in 1869.

There is a death of an Edith Francis in Bath in 1864. Could this be Editha?

BathBMD gives you the ages at death, http://www.bathbmd.org.uk

The Edith Francis who died in 1864 was a baby. There was another in 1866 who was 69, presumably too old.

I am pretty sure that the younger Eleanor, Margaret Wyllie and Editha are the daughters of William Francis' brother John by his wife Eleanor Martha Wyllie, who died in 1845.

All were baptised at Ilchester by John Bondfield and Eleanor Martha FRANCIS, as well as a second Margaret in 1845. Eleanor is recorded as born in Paris.

Editha, second daughter of late Dr John Francis, Ilchester, Somerset, married Thomas Greene, only son of John Greene of Millbrook, County Kildare, on 15th April 1865 in Dublin.

Wow! Thank you, Dave Jones.

Armed with that one snippet and an itchy mouse finger, I now know that Editha had four of a family, died in 1876 and was buried in Dublin. Her widower remarried in 1884 and died in 1901, also buried in Dublin.

Their eldest son John Francis Greene, died in New South Wales in 1899; their daughter Editha Greene studied at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin from 1885 to 1890, and eventually died unmarried in Norwich in 1936; their son Thomas Westland Green inherited his father's estate and was still unmarried in 1911; and their son Arthur became an ophthalmic surgeon and practised in Norwich. He married Wilhelmina Webb Winslow and they had a son and a daughter; the latter married Cecil E V Ryan in Norwich in 1935. Wilhelmina died in Norwich in 1962.

I have yet to find death details from Thomas Westland Greene or Arthur Greene. I wish I could still access the Irish Times online!
