Has anybody come acros the Surname of Bockerah or Bockera, apprently could be Jewish! I have no leads apart from
Solomon Bockerah married Anne Sarah, (nee ?) abt 1788
they had two know children
(1) Solomon Bockera born 9 March 1789 St Leonards, Shorditch
(2) Sarah Bockerah born 1791/2 Sydney, NSW and died 1833 Sydney
The only other info was gleemed from the Old Bailey records.
A Jewish Londoner Convicted in London on 9 Oct 1789 in London and sentenced to life. Left London in 1789 and arrived in Sydney in 1790 on the Scarborough 2, one of the ships of the infamous Second Fleet
BOCKERAH Solomon London Life .
SOLOMON BOCKERAH and ROBERT HOBBS were indicted for burglariously breaking and entering the dwelling house of James Pinkinton , about the hour of seven in the night, on the 1st of November last, and burglariously stealing one piece of velveteen, containing thirty-nine yards, value 8 l. 4 s. his property
(Solomon BOCKERAH though only survived just over a year in the colony and was buried on the 16th July 1791. His wife Ann arrived "free" aboard the Neptune and she too died in 1793 leaving a daughter, Sarah b 1792, to be raised as an orphan)

The 9th March 1789 date is an Anglican (Church of England) christening date at St Leonard Shoreditch for Solomon Bockery parents Solomon and Ann of Peartree Court child born 21st January.
However if the couple were Jewish you would expect to find further confirmation in Jewish records.

I found a little information that suggests he was a Sephardi Jew. This would put his family from Spain or Portugal. I also found a witness statement about the Velvet theft that referred to Solomon as Bull Bockerah, so perhaps that fits well? I'm interested if anyone knows where to search Sephardi records.

Solomon was my 7th-or-so grandfather. My sister told me of him 5 years ago. At the time a boy was staying on our lounge room floor. I enquired his name and nationality. He was a Bukarah Jew, his family is from Uzbekistan. (His name was Solomon!)

That sounds interesting. I didn't know there was a place called Bukhara. Was the boy staying with you related to the Bockerah family? How do you trace your line back to Solomon?

This is my sister's interest mainly; I am helping out with a little research. However: Sarah remained in Australia, had a son, and a line of several mothers led to our own mother, in New Zealand.

It was on Londonlives.org, but now that I reread it I realise that it's a mistake in the transcript. It should read Bell, Bockerah, and Hobb. As in three last names. There are four documents relating to Bockerah there.
How did your sister find out about the Uzbekistan connection. I haven't been able to find anything about Solomon Bockerah's parents.

It was I, sighting a tempting but tentative conclusion, who found the Uzbekistani possibility, which was suggested by lounge-floor-Solomon. Still, there are in fact Bukhara Jews, and it feels likely enough for me to accept it as a working hypothesis that the family came from Bukhara, directly or indirectly, to England at some time. I do mean to suggest that I am seeking hard evidence. Money may need to be spent, preferably by someone who actually has money.
As for whether this boy was family - he thought it likely, but then again he didn't really know any more than I. Yet we accepted that we are probably cousins.
My guess is that Bokhara may have been a use-name derived from the family's origin - perhaps the fashion for surnames was not established in Uzbekistan at that time. It might be a time consuming exercise to discover more, but I'll poke around in-between my other little jobs and see what can be done.
I'll find lounge-floor Solomon if I can, and ask him to put me in contact with his family, who might be more in a position to suggest a way to advance the enquiry. However a desirable next step might be to obtain birth records of whatever kind for Solomon Bockerah and/or for Isaac, Solomon Bockerah's brother, to see if I can find their parents' names and origins.
What efforts have already been made to find such birth records, anybody, please?

I think that an Abram Boccara fled the Inquisition from italy in about 1709, but my Italian is non-existent and of course I have only an Italian language reference.
