There are some photo's of Mayfield House in Manchester Local Image Collection circa 1965 that might be worth you looking at.
Try emailing Manchester Record Office they may have some records.

I lived in Mayfield House for around 6 months in 1963 when I was 7 years old along with my mother and younger siblings. It was being used at the time as a long term shelter for homeless women and children. A very depressing place! Even in 1963, it still carried the old "workhouse" atmosphere. Long dormitories, bare wooden floors and long wooden tables in the "dining room". However, I do recall that most of the staff were kind to the children. One of the staff members gave me her empty bottle of "Blue Grass" perfume-at that time, it was the most beautiful smell I had ever encountered and to this day, I still recall Mayfield house whenever I smell Blue Grass perfume!

I am researching Mayfield House and the temporary Part III residents for a History MA. I have not come across your family name but by the early 1960s they were becoming more aware of maintaining confidentiality. It could also mean that your family did not cause problems for the staff. I will be in Manchester again in the next month or so to do a bit more research and would love to interview you if you are interested (under the data protection act you will not be identified) My dissertation will be finished in the next few months and I'd be more than happy to share what I have found about life there.

I was not at Mayfield house but my younger sister who was about 6 years old at the time of being in Mayfield house, and can remember things about being there will gladly meet you and tell you what she can remember, but her older brother will not talk about it to anybody he is a very very private man. I don't know how to pm you so I cannot go into more details otherwise I would give a contact number. sorry about that.

I lived at Mayfield House when I was about 5 or 6. That would be about 1948. I attended Every street school. I too remember the Porridge! The cooks name was Michael. The staff were kind to children. We lived there whilst waiting for a council house in Wythenshawe. My father couldn't stay and had to stay with his Mum. I remember my older brother had to be in by 10pm otherwise he would be locked out until the next morning! Many years later it became a homeless shelter.

Yes, I've got a few on my PC. It was a grim looking place but, of course, I wouldn't really be aware of that as a child.
