Hello my fellow detectives, iam trying to locate the parents of a William Benge born 18 Dec 1819 at Boughton Monchelsea.(NZ Death certificate and newspaper obituary) in his death certificate in 1908 Greytown, NZ it says Elvey, Walter and Mary Benge (nee Miller) were his parents but unable to find them, and now believe this may not be right?
Would like to find any Benges and Stonham's buried at Boughton Monchelsea which may give clues to his parents names.
William Benge married (cannot find marriage entry on freeBDM either) to Mary Ston(e)ham daugher of John *Jack Stonham and Elizabeth, also of Boughton Monchelsea. It appears two children were born with both parents surnames, suggesting that they didn't marry.....
William and Mary Benge's children are as follows......
Mary Ann Benge Stoneham born c1846 Maidstone Married Jun qrt 1868 at Maidstone to William Sunnuck she died Sep qrt 1873 and Maidstone.
William Benge Stoneham born c1849 died c1849 Maidstone
William Benge born dec qrt 1855 Maidstone
Henry Benge born 13 March 1858 Maidstone
Susanah Mable Benge born 19 Jun 1860 Maidstone.
Its obivious to me that the Stonham family lived in the same Village (Boughton Monchelsea) as the Benges.
Mary's parents were Jack and Elizabeth Stonham Jack died c1892 and is buried at Boxley and Elizabeth is buried c1850 at Boxley
in the 1841 census William Benge snr was living at Tovil age 30 working at a paper mill no other family members recorded.
Are there other Benges in Tovil 1841 census or Boughton Monchelsea.
in the 1851 census family is misspelt and is Under William Bange a farm labourer
in the 1861 census it says William 40 a farm labourer born Rochester (not Boughton Monchelsea?)
So another curious thing is that it appears that William Benge born 1819 is a only child, but i surspect there should be others around this time. Perhaps there could be a bapt records for this family.
I have found a bapt entry for William and Mary's daughter Mary Ann Benge Stoneham on the 9th Oct 1846 at Maidstone
she died as Mary Ann Sunnuck c1873 Maidstone, where is she buried?
Welcome your help or idea's clearly at a dead end here! ???

The 1851 census says NK(not known) for place of birth. :-
If he was born in Rochester you may find a baptism on Medway Cityark

in the 1841 census William Benge snr was living at Tovil age 30 working at a paper mill no other family members recorded.
This would have him born c1805-1811 so we may need to look for another one in 1841 :-\

Thanks Casalguidi, very intersting and could be my missing link......
William Benge was born in 1819 so could still fit with Elvey being born abt c1798
Is there any Mary Benge (not married) in the 1841-71 census for Boughton Monchelsea - Maidstone born abt 1790-1800. I noticed there was a Mary Benge whom died in Boughton Monchelsea on 4 Aug 1833. There is also a Susannah Benge born c1811, this is also interesting as one of Williams children was also names Susannah Benge...
Cheers for your help

I did wonder about this one for William ???
1841 Pit Lands, Boughton Monchelsea
Samuel BENGE 63 ag lab b.Kent
Martha 77 b.Kent
Thomas 35 ag lab b.Kent
William 15 b.Kent
HO107/456 book 12 folio 5 page 3

It looks like Samuel and Martha did have a daughter named Mary http://www.familysearch.org but your death registration says her maiden name was "MILLER". I wonder if she married one of their sons (or perhaps another relation)?
Casalguidi :)
-
So would Martha be 62 when she had William?
I thought that perhaps my Mary Benge nee Miller as on William death could be perhaps occupation 'Miller' and father was in fact Elvey Walter... Its my best guest at this point
Cheers

So would Martha be 62 when she had William?
Erm, no, I wouldn't have thought so - I was suggesting that William maybe the grandson or step-grandson of Samuel and Martha.
What is your source for Mary STONEHAM's parentage - was this from her death certificate?
Do you have any emigration details for William and Mary?
I'm just thinking about their marriage ie. why we can't find it or a reason for them not marrying if either of them had been married before etc.?

Are oke, perhaps william is Thomas' son in the 1841 census
I have Mary Benge (nee Stoneham - or Stonham) death cert which says parents are John and Elizabeth Stoneham but i could not find a John until i found a Jack and Elizabeth of Boughton Monchelsea. Jack died in 1892 at Boxley and Elizabeth c1850 they were married in 1827 at Boughton Monchelsea
Yes William and Mary Benge came to NZ on the Ship Waikato in c1874 - there daughter Mary Ann Benge Stoneham (Sunnuck) died in 1873, so with perhaps William Benge mother dying young and his father Elvey Water dying in 1869 my guess no immediate family left. Note other Benges to come to NZ in the 1840's

Hi,
Mary Ann Sunnuck nee Benge was the youngest daughter of William Benge (born 1814 at Tovil - died 25/9/18710 at Maidstone) and Susannah Benge nee Mitchel (born 1802 ar East Malling - 04/3/1879 at Maidstone). Mary Ann married William Sunnuck, her next door neighbour at Maidstone 11/4/1868. they had no children and she died of peritonitis 18/7/1873 and is buried in Maidstone Cemetery.
Her father, William, was the 4th child born to Thomas Benge (born abt 1786 place unknown - died 18/12/1842 at Tovil) and Sarah nee Barton (1788 Boxley - 26/01/1867 Tovil). A total of 10 children were born to Thomas and Sarah with the youngest 9 being born at Tovil (thegenealogist.co.uk) has baptisms and deaths for them.
Hope that this helps,
Catherine Benge
