Hello,
I'm hoping a 'Sheffield expert' can fill me in on a few details.
My gg-grandmother lived at "Farm Bank Shrewsbury Rd" at the time of her marriage (1844). Can anyone tell me what part of town that was in and what it was like? Would "Farm Bank" be the name of the house, or would it be part of the name of the road? I believe her father, Thomas Shepherd was a merchant and was quite wealthy.
The mother, Hannah, later (1871) lived at Lowfield Terrace, Ecclesall Bierlow. Again, can anyone tell me exactly where that was and what it was like? Was it part of Sheffield or a nearby village?
I am also trying to figure out which church my gg-grandmother would have been married in in 1844. Her marriage certificate simply says that she was married in the parish church, Sheffield. The minister was Edward Goodwin. Would it have been St Peter and St Paul?
It's hard for us from Downunder to get a grip on where everything is in the UK and how far apart the places are!
Many thanks, Treesearcher

Hi Treesearcher
You may be interested in this site
www.picturesheffield.co.uk
It shows old pictures from sheffield. In some of the photos if you hover over them it tells you who lived in them. But I think thats only if the person who donated the photos knew. A tip with the search is to look at each one. There are quite a lot!! If you have the time its really interesting and maybe it will give you an idea of what it was like. Maybe you may see the streets or houses you are searching for.
Enjoy

Hi treesearcher Found your ancesters vault. Very overgrown with brambles but managed to clear a bit 5 people buried there. Insciption still readable in places. I will go back with tools and get a better picture but heres one to be getting on with. Hope it works this time. Enjoy!

It worked i'm so glad now the names are William son of Thomas/Hannah. Thomas himself. Ellen wife of William Neepe of southwell Notts who is also the daughter of Thomas/Hannah Hannah herself and Lydia daughter of ? ( heres where the brambles got the better of me. Will send insciption in full when i've cleared the site.
Hope this helps with your research.

hello Treesearcher,
'The Parish Church, Sheffield' will indeed mean the Church of St Peter & St Paul, which is now the Cathedral (it became a Cathedral in 1914).
Edward Goodwin succeeded his father (who may also have been an Edward) as assistant minister at this Church in 1817. he died in 1847. I have several references to him on file as officiating at weddings in the Parish Church.
In 1844 Sheffield was still one big parish but was on the verge of being split up into more manageable ecclesiastical districts.

Farm Bank was one of the large houses which looked down on the town from the slopes of Sheffield Park. On the 1903 Ordnance Survey map (Godfrey reprint), where it is unnamed, it is divided into two dwellings. It may have been divided by 1851 - I can't tell from the 'Heritage Cartography' version (redrawn) of the 1851 O.S., though on that map it is named.
The house was approached by a short lane or drive running south from Shrewsbury Road. This lane is called Farm Bank Road in 1903. There is a Farm Bank Road on the modern map, but it is not the same road! It is off Granville Road and may have provided access to the house from there at some time.
It would not have been such a prestigious address after the coming of the Midland Railway in 1870.

Hi Hugh,
I'm so glad that my post has generated more information for treesearcher.

Thanks, this is a great site.
Found a picture of where my ancestor lived in 1861 - 1, Bernard Street, Sheffield :)
BUT a closer look at the census entry (RG9/3490 folio123 page 36)
clearly shows the numbering of the street as follows; 91... 89... 1... 73... 71... 69.
Can this be correct? I'd like to be sure that this is the correct house.
I expect the area has been demolished now.

Hi Flame and Hugh,
Thankyou so much for all your help!
Hugh, the information you have come up with is amazing!! Thankyou so much for going to the cemetery and posting the photo. Are the people all buried in a single 'plot' or is it a different set-up? Thankyou, too, for the information about the house and the church. It is fabulous to know all this!
Cheers!

hello treesearcher,
just to clarify, it was flame that posted the photo and has been fighting the vegetation in the general Cemetery to get it ;)
...though I have my own set of tools for similar purposes, spending a lot of time in Walkley Cemetery. :)

Hi Treesearcher
Yes they are all buried in a vault, in the nonconformist part of the cemetery. T vlt plot 011. Have a look at the website www.gencem.org and have a look around its very interesting. I've just joined the friends of the cemetery cost me a fiver and I get a newsletter so many times a year. Also for a small donation I think they may search the archives for further information of the occupants of the vault.
Hugh
I was going to take my tools with me but as I hadn't been able to find the vault the first few times I'd tried, I didn't bother also don't think they would have let me on the bus with my machete ;D

Hi Flame,
Thankyou for doing so much for me. I greatly appreciate the photo of the vault and the details of the 'occupants'. You have been extremely helpful.

Hi
You are very welcome Treesearcher. Finding it gave me as much pleasure as if it was one of my relatives. I did take three more but the one I posted was the best of the bunch. Am hoping to get back soon and take a better one. Had lots of practice trying to resize the picture. Hope it came out ok at your end.
