I have come across this man in a friends family tree, but we know nothing much about him.
We have found a little on the web and an old post on RC asking about him. ( below )
There is also a tree online saying he was born in Lorraine, France.
I have found the marriage on 2 Oct 1796 in London , and some adverts for a book -
The complete system of the French language; ... By Nicholas Salmon
Author: Nicholas Salmon
Publisher: London : Printed for the author, by T. Spilsbury; and sold by Mr. Elmsley; Mr. Hookham; and Mr. Richardson, 1788.
"I am seeking information on Nicholas Salmon - birth, marriage & death details. He was a language teacher at Red Lion St, Clerkenwell & an author of many French dictionaries from 1788 to 1821. He died prior to 1841 census. His wife was Barbara ."
Is there anyone who can help me any more with this man, I have his family after his death, it`s just his birth and his teaching I would like to find more about. Where did the poster find these details I wonder ?
Thanks

You can find some of his books on Google Books.

Thanks, i have come across those, it`s the man himself I was curious about.
I may have found his baptism on IGI, but his burial would be good.

Was he ever in Bedford?
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ has a couple of documents circa 1814/1815 about a Nicholas Salmon, schoolmaster at Biggleswade.
The earliest I can find of him in England is an advertisement in the "World and Fashionable Advertiser" of 1787, where he is described as having "during the course of 16 years" been a teacher to the gentry in both France and England.
In Google Books there is a book given the rather longwinded name of:
La France littéraire ou dictionnaire bibliographique des savants, historiens et gens de lettres de la France, ainsi que les littérateurs étrangers qui ont écrit en français, plus particulièrement: pendant les XVIIIè et XIXè siècles
Which has some info on his writing including some works (reprints?) which look to have been published in Paris later than your 1821.

I have come across a Nicholas - schoolteacher , who could have been a son,
1838. August 28th St Mary Woolwich
Elizabeth Barbara Salmon married Thomas Self.
Father Nicholas George Thomas Salmon schoolteacher ?
But there also is a Nicholas George Thomas Salmon 1798 – 1837 who was a police officer. He was the son of Nicholas George( John) Thomas Salmon and Sarah who was Nicks second wife.
George Henry Salmon b 1836
Baptised 30 Nov 1836 - Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene, Surrey.
Father Nicholas George Thomas Salmon , Police constable
Mother Sarah Salmon. Abode Salisbury Place.
Whether these are the same man ??? ???

This is my trail so far, and I am trying to confirm that Nicholas the Frenchman was the ancestor of George Salmon in 1841/1851.
I have managed to use a friends Anc ** to find records, but as I am not familier with this area can`t be sure.
Any help with be greatly appreciated . There must be some records available I don`t know about.

Now I getting confused. ::) are the schoolteacher and policeman the one and the same, or not ?
I would take a guess with the occupation , schoolteacher seems to fit more with this

This matches the 1851, so it seems George is probably half brother to Elizabeth ( Barbara ) Self.

Hello from Australia. I am connected to this Nicholas Salmon - he wrote many books related to French & latin & was also a language teacher. He lived in Biggleswade & tutored privately. He could have possibly died in 1819. I also have noted that he was shot in 1824 at some military banquet - haven't confirmed either date yet as being the date of death for my Nicholas Salmon. He was definately born in France.
I am connected from his son John cook Salmon
