I am seeking information relating to my gguncle, who arrived in Australia (NSW records state Sydney/Newcastle) on the "Bangalore" in January 1855, with his older brother, Josiah. Parents were Josiah CHAPMAN and Ann ABBOTT. Apparently Samuel went to South Australia and Josiah lost contact with him after a while. Josiah remained in NSW and married Catherine GALBRAITH. Apparently there are several Samuel CHAPMANs of this vintage in SA, and with no further identifying information, locating the right one is proving very difficult.
Forward thanks for any assistance provided, it is greatly appreciated.

Where was he born and what year there will help t fine your Samuel

Hi there,
There are two sets of lists of passengers at the NSW SRO for that voyage (arriving 13 Jan 1855) and it is possible that it came firstly to Sydney and then went to Newcastle... the lists should show you their native place and their age as recorded by the emigration agent in 1855

Have you tried the trove digitised newspapers for mention of the ship, or of the Chapman lads ? http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
Fingers crossed these suggestions will be of help
Cheers, JM

Hi Narelle,
In the Biographical Index of Sth Australia there is:-

arrived: 1852 on the CHARLOTTE JANE
occupation: farmer residing Kybunga, Lochiel rel: Meth
married: 9.10.1856 Adelaide, Caroline NEVILLE born c1823 died 2.11.1907 buried Lochiel SA.

The Josiah name and lst child as Annie seem to fit the rest of your CHAPMAN's.

My Josiah and Samuel were the sons of Josiah CHAPMAN and Ann ABBOTT. Josiah Snr was an Independent Minister listed in Steeple Bum(p)stead Census post Josiah Jnr and Samuel's departure.
Thanks muchly for the replies from all, however the Samuel CHAPMAN who married Caroline NEVILLE, I have been told is not the one I am looking for as he arrived in 1852 on the 'Charlotte Jane'. My Samuel was born in 1829, arriving as a 25 year old (maybe not having had his 26th birthday prior to arrival). Josiah was 27 at time of arrival.
I know that I had posted on the England thread re Samuel and Josiah, but I hoped that by putting a post on the Australia thread that it might provide a different approach to a vexing problem. And this one is specifically looking for Samuel, as I know where Josiah ended up, him being my ggrandfather.
I really appreciate the help being offered, as there is no one left in the older generation on either side of my family who can help. Like someone posted elsewhere, I do wish I had paid more attention when my parents were still alive.

Some thoughts ...
Rhetorical questions perhaps ....
Both the Charlotte Jane and the Bangalore arrived in January 1852. Charlotte Jane into Adelaide and Bangalore into Sydney, possibly with transhipments onto Newcastle.
Is it possible that the passenger lists at the NSW State Records Office are based on embarkation records, rather than arrival records ? Could these two ships have been in any "foreign" port together along the voyage, and one of the lads ended up on the other vessel during the voyage .... Did they both depart from the same port of origin? Was the same shipping agent handling both vessels...
Or were there two lads on the high seas in late 1851 heading to the Australian goldfields both named Samuel CHAPMAN ...
Cheers, JM

The Samuel CHAPMAN who arrived in SA on the Charlotte Jane in 1852 supposedly came from Kent. Not said this man stayed in SA. The Biographical Index SA is known to have plenty of errors and someone may have

Another Samuel Chapman arrived in SA with wife Eliza Gorman also in 1852. Definitely not your man.

A logical explanation for your Josiah losing contact with brother Samuel was Samuel's death in 1878 at the age of 49 yrs.

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions. The arrival of my Samuel and Josiah was in January 1855, not January 1852. However, I have had a sneaking suspicion that the Samuel who arrived in 1852 may have returned to England to entice his brother to join him in the new country. On arrival Samuel may well have returned to SA as he may have established a life there on his previous visit. Josiah, on the other hand, remained in NSW, married and had a family, his sons being Josiah and William. From what I can gather from NSW BDM records, there were two births for Josiah, so I assume that the first one died in infancy, and then along came my grandfather.
Rhonda, in the book it is interesting to note that Samuel was a plumber. I didn't know that profession even existed at that time, but I guess they still had to install pipes for water, etc. I do know that my ggrandfather, Josiah, did not maintain his profession of Stationer, as he became a farmer. Anyway, I shall just have to get out the shovel and 'keep digging'.

I forgot to mention that both Samuels who arrived in SA in 1852 were in fact assisted immigrants.

Hi Rhonda May,
The Samuel Chapman that you mentioned who arrived on the Epaminodas 2Aug 1852 with Eliza Gorman is my ancestor. I've been looking for a record of their arrival for sometime, so thanks very much. Do you have another document which lists Eliza's maiden name as Gorman?
Their first child in South Australia was a daughter born 3 Nov 1852 called Margaret Ann which fits.
