Hi.... The nearest I could find was this one on freebmd...there wasn't a match that I could find on Ancestry:

~~~~~~~~
Marriages Sep 1882   (>99%)
~~~~~~~~

Bibby  Thomas    Swansea  11a 825
JONES  David     Swansea  11a 825
Phillips  Mary     Swansea  11a 825
Richards  Emily     Swansea  11a 825

There are 3 marriages on Yorkshirebmd for James Bibby but not with the spouse you mention.

 Do you know if they married in Hull.

1881 census:
Reference RG11, Piece 4747, Folio 92, Page 24
7 Howe Street, Sutton & Stone ferry, Sculcoates, Yorkshire

Bibby, James  Head  M  55  Chelsea Pensioner and Labourer Iron Ship Yard  b Croydon, Surrey
Bibby, Elizabeth  Wife  F  33  b Whitby, Yorkshire
Bibby, Alfred  Son  M  11  b Hull
Bibby, James  Son  M  5  b Hull
Bibby, Ellen  Daughter  F  1  b Hull

Therefore I presume a marriage took place c 1869?

KG - No. Alfred was Elizabeth's son from a previous marriage. You can see them in 1871.
Carol - I don't know where they were married.
I believe this is going to need a parish register lookup starting with Hull or Whitby.

So what was Elizabeth's previous marriage?
What was Alfred's surname when born?

Is this her first Marriage:

Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1870
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
WOODWARD James RICHARDS Elizabeth All Saints, Sculcoates Hull HAS/18/1

If so...then we should be looking for a Bibby/ Woodward marriage.

That's correct, she married Oliver Richards.
But I'm not looking for her ancestry.

Hi Steve (+ others)

We have looked in many Parish Registers in Hull & Sculcoates for this marriage and have come up with nothing. There is a chance they were married elsewhere (Whitby for example) but nothing has shown up to date.

I know they were in Hull from March 1876 onwards.

On her children's birth certs they show her surname as formerly: Moss, Richards, Allison (this was her birth name - Ann Elizabeth Allison).

A clue might be found if anyone can find out what happened to Oliver Richards - he seems to have vanished completely after 1871 census.

She also married again (after the death of James Bibby in 1883) - to James Beckett in 1893 and that certificate names her as Bibby and says she is a widow...could be a fib of course....

Hi Paul
Have you tried Yorkshire trade directories between 1870 and 1880?
Looking for Oliver Richards and/or James Bibby around Hull/Whitby area.

We've tried some but I can't remember for which dates.
I will mention it as another possible source.

Oliver Richards was a fisherman so it could be he was lost at sea, or travelled to another port and just "disappeared"!

Both James and Elizabeth were in Hull in March 1876 and she was last seen prior to that in Whitby in April 1871 (census) married to Oliver Richards. Something between these two dates is the key to the mystery!
