Hi everyone, only started to search my family tree yesterday, so quite new to this. so far I have
Thomas Cookson married Maud Grimshaw 1906 in Old Fylde Register Office.
He had 2 sons Eric 1907 and Kieth 1908? and a daughter Muriel.
I know he lived in Blackpool and Blackburn, but have very little info on him. I know my grandad Eric and brother Keith owned stonemasons in Blackburn and there's connections towards the Blackpool stonemasons. I'm thinking Thomas had a brother and they split the business.
Wondering is anyone can help with trying to find Thomas' parents I'm really stuck.
Any help much appreciated :)
Mandy

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. :)
His marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of his father which will help you find the family in earlier census. The age of Thomas should also be shown which will help you to search for his birth registration. His birth certificate should show the maiden name of his mother which will help you to find his parent's marriage and also to find his mother's family.

Thank you.
So the only way I'm going to get anywhere is to buy a copy of his marraige certificate?
I have found it on BMD but it only shows me a little bit of info.
Thank you think I'll get onto buying that :)
-
Hi,
Yes, for a Register Office marriage you have to buy a copy of the certificate; church weddings you can sometimes view the Parish registers.

Thomas COOKSON is much harder to track down as none have POB as Blackpool in 1901 Census.
You really need the Marriage Cert of Thomas/Maud to find his Fathers name. But if he is the one I think he is it may have no Father on it or a lie.
I think he is the illeg Son of Elizabeth COOKSON born c 1864, Preesall, Lancs
Thomas COOKSON christened 06 Dec 1885, Pulton Le Fyde, Lancashire
Mother ELIZABETH

Trish :)
Hi Trish he was a stonemason see my eariler post
-
Thanks MargP,
Yes I realised that. I had read your post to get his POB and age and then I searched.
I had also just started to look for them on that Census too.
There is no Thomas occp Stonemason in 1901 and this is the closest One I could find.
A Builders Apprentice could easily go on to be a Stonemason.
Thats why I wanted someone to search the Census to check the Occp
Cheers,
Trish

I may be on the wrong track :-[
Now I have figured out who owned/started the Stonemasons Business;
"Established in 1899 by William Lambert Cookson, the firm of WL COOKSON Ltd is a family business, renowned for personal and first-class service throughout the Blackpool, Fylde and Preston areas and beyond."
1901 Census
6 Jackson St,
Blackpool, Lancashire
RG13/3972/68/19
William L COOKSON, 25, Head, Mar, Monumental Sculptor, Own Account, born Blackpool
Jane Cookson, 25, Wife, Mar, born Preston
This William does have a Brother THOMAS born c 1887, Blackpool.
1891 he is a Scholar and 1901 a Bricklayers Apprentice
Parents JAMES Cookson and Mary Ellen CHARNOCK who Married June 1874, Lancaster, 8e 1050.
As I said earlier the Marriage Cert of Thomas/Maud is a must buy!
-
I wont delete the info that I now think is wrong as someone may be searching that Family in the future.
Do you need Census entries or do you have access mandyandleggs?
If you search for William Lambert Cookson c 1876, Balckpool you will find them.
-
This is brilliant, thank you. Monumental Sculptor? Is that a Stonemason?
Mandy ;D
Yes Mandy it is a stonemason, I think that Trish is on the right track with this but you will need the marriage cert to confirm it all you can buy them on line from the GRO or from the RO for the district Margp

If you search for William Lambert Cookson c 1876, Balckpool you will find them.
Not sure what you mean about census enteries? When I have looked at them I only see a picture with names and addresses with very swirly wirly hand writing which is extremely hard to read.
I was thinking of looking on BMD for Thomas Cookson Now I can work out year of birth, I will then get his mothers maiden name from that, then looking on Census 1901fora woman witth same maiden name and with a son of Thomas to hopefully find his parents.
Do you think that will work??
-
By Census entries I mean what I have typed up for You;
Eg '
1901 Census
6 Jackson St,
Blackpool, Lancashire
RG13/3972/68/19
William L COOKSON, 25, Head, Mar, Monumental Sculptor, Own Account, born Blackpool
Jane Cookson, 25, Wife, Mar, born Preston
Just looking for BMD on FreeBMD wont work.
You have to follow the Family back through census entries, find Children then check for a possible Marriage and then go back to census entries again.
Some of us have more experience at deciphering old handwriting.
Do you have a Subscription to Ancestry?
Would you like me to type all the Census and info I have found for James/Mary, Thomas/Williams Parents up for you?
-
You dont need to add a quote every time you answer a question. It just uses up server space.
-

It was a successful business, judging by the size of the estate.
My link to a Cookson is a liaison resulting in an illegitimate child who died young.
