Title: Haslett/Hazlett
Post by: stephen haslett on Thursday 23 June 11 17:43 BST (UK)
Hi, I am new to rootschat and and trying to trace two family lines of Hasletts from Belfast.

James Haslett, born Belfast 1847 married Anna Winters, born 1846 Portadown. Married St Annes COI Belfast 1865. James father is John, a shipping clerk, and Annas father is Francis, a gardiner.

Hugh Haslett/Hazlett born Belfast1848, married Margaret Ritchie, born1853 at Linenhall church, Belfast 1872. Hughs father was John, a labourer and Margarets father was William, a bricklayer.

At the moment I have hit the proverbial brick wall as there are so many Hasletts/Hazletts around during the early 1800s and so few records.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Stephen Haslett.

Hello jimchealsea,

Thanks for your reply

Both lines of Haslett lived in Belfast at least from the 1840s onwards though they may have lived somewhere else before then. I know that Hughs father John married Isabella (no surname ) and they are buried in Belfast city cemetery.

Thank you for your suggestions anyway.

Link to 1901 census- 20 is the number on the census form and may or may not be the actual street number-

According to 1911 census this couple were married 48 years (c1863)-

Thanks for your replies.

I already have the 1901 census info on James.
It is tracing his father John that has me stuck. Also he must surely have had brothers and sisters.

The confusing problem I have is not only having Hasletts from my maternal grandmothers line but also Hasletts/Hazletts from my paternal grandfathers line. The weird thing is that they both go back to a gt,gt,gt grandfather John Haslett . I know that John on my fathers side married an Isabella. I dont know whether they are two different people or the same person. Both families also lived in Belfast from the 1840s on.

Again thanks for the suggestions and any further help will be very welcome.

Stephen

Hi Jim,

I have and in fact that is where I discovered that Johns wife was Isabella. They are buried with three children ( infant mortality seemed very high in those days ). John, Josephine and Herbert Haslett, all died 1890s.

 Thanks anyway, Stephen

My Grandfather was James Ernest Haslett. He was born 1883 in Belfast, Ireland. His Father's name was Hugh Haslett and his Mother was Margaret.
James married Margaret Lillian McMurray on January 29th, 1909 in Vancouver, (Gilley Station) BC Canada.  It is the family's understanding that although my Grandfather immigrated to Canada, a couple of his brothers (?) immigrated to Australia.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks :)

I wonder if this is the family in 1901? Note that son Hugh was born in England so evidently the family had moved about a little. Mother’s maiden name was Ritchie.

Son Hugh married on 5th May 1902:

Here’s Samuel’s birth:

Here’s James’ birth in Belfast on 24.4.1882:

I found one other sibling born in Belfast, who was David 27.6.1878 (who died in Belfast on 27.6.1878):

I see a possible birth for Hugh (jr) in Salford, Manchester Apr – Jun 1876 Vol 8d, page 1.

I see a possible death for Hugh Haslett in Belfast on 3.12.1881 aged 33. (So he pre-deceased son James). There are other Hasletts buried in the same grave, that you might want to research.

As Elwyn has already found in reply #9, James was born in 1882.
