William Doley (28) arrived in South Australia on the Clyde 23/04/1878 with following:
Sarah - 30
Sarah Ann - 6
Thomas - 4
Amy - 2
George - infant, sadly died on voyage 1/03/1878.
Can not find the death of William in South Australia.
NSW BDM has a William W (12967/1908) father= William - Mother= Sarah and
William (14750/1912) father =George - Mother = Sarah.
Can anyone advise if the 1912 death is the abovementioned William and William W is the son. Did William and Sarah had any more children in South Australia?.
I have the death of Sarah 12/1/1928 and Sarah Ann 9/12/1927.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Names here but no Mrs S DOLEY Snr. However Wm and family were assisted immigrants and I wonder if Sarah Snr. paid her own fare and therefore wouldn't be on the 'official' list which is listed on SA Records.

Thank you Cando and Dundee for this info.
In the funeral notice of William Sn. there is a mention of a W.H. Simons. This is my g.grandfather who married Sarah Ann Doley.( Mother = Sarah WoodField ). So this is the right family.
I also have a George Doley b. Jan 1844 d. 7/11/1928 in SA? Arrived 1881 on the Stirlingshire and a Thomas Doley b. 1847 Arrived 1878 on the Rodney. I had not confirmed if they are connected to William although the 1851 Census would suggest they were all brothers.
I will look into the death of Sarah in 1893 it appears very possible to be William's mother.
Kind Regards,
Jack

Sarah Doley died on 16th May 1893 at the residence of her son, Thomas James Doley of Gibson St. Bowden SA. Native of Birmingham.
The death cert. states widow of George, Glassblower. Unfortunately does not say length of time in the Colony.
I am confident, George who died in 1877 in Birmingham is her huband.(1851 Census - Glassblower).
It would therefore appear she came to SA between 1877 and 1893.
George Henry Doley (son) arrived in 1881 on the Stirlingshire (Ship 81/2 ) but can not find a passenger list to confirm she came with him.
Anyone have access to this passenger list?

This is the only information you will get on a 1893 death certificate in South Australia. There is no provision to state lenth of time in colony.
From the South Australian Resources at the top of the board.

George Henry Doley (son) arrived in 1881 on the Stirlingshire but can not find a passenger list to confirm she came with him.
(Ship 81/2 ) This is a reference number from SA Archives and SAGHS ships arriving SA. There are no online records for ships arriving in this period. Did you read through the list of passengers?
I note you are in Adelaide. Perhaps a visit to the State Library may be helpful. I have not idea if a passenger list for the STIRLINGSHIRE exists. The survival rate for shipping lists in SA is very poor.

Assisted immigrants....
Official passenger lists mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under UK assisted passage 1845-86 formerly known as Source 313, then GRG35/48a and now GRG35/48/1 at State Records (SA), this section lists the vessels whose records survive in some form from 1836 to 1886. The STIRLINGSHIRE is included in the list.
The number of voyages with surviving records number just 749 and the material available for each list varies considerably.
The material you do locate may include any of the following:
An embarkation list prepared by the agent or emigration agents.
A passenger manifest prepared by the captain.
Certificate of arrival prepared by the immigration officials.
Sundry lists created for other purposes such as fee-payers, land-holders.
Problems include -
Survival rate of lists is poor.
Lists may not be a true indication of the immigrants who actually arrived.
Writing is often difficult to decipher.
Useful information on origins is rare.
Teenagers in families are split off and listed as single men or single women.
Departure and arrival date may vary from record to record.
Fee-paying passengers usually not recorded.
Crew never recorded except in manifests.
Hope you find this helpful.

Thank you Aussie and Cando for this info.
My g.father William R Simons owned a store in Bowden. I will find out the location. Wonder if it was the same one.
Stirlingshire departed Plymouth 8/7/1881.On board was
George Doley, 37
Elizabeth, 31
William G, 11
James T, 10
Charles, 9
Albert E, 7
Samuel, 5
Alfred,3
Sarah, 1
Alas no Sarah. However could not find the single woman's page on which she would have been listed, as she was not with husband or children , if indeed she was on this ship.
Also found the Rodney 13/09/1878 on which was Thomas G Doley and his family, but no Sarah.

No luck to date, with locating when Sarah Sn arrived in Australia .
However, do not believe the marriage of George Doley and Sarah Bolton as mentioned in post#3 are my George and Sarah. Married, Harborne, Stafford 13/8/1849- Bride Sarah Bolton -Widow, father John Cadby.
In 1851Census there is two George and Sarah Doley's. One in Warrington and one in Birmingham. The Warrington one I believe is my line. The Birmingham George was a Carpenter and the children were:
Betsey - 11 , Mary Ann - 8 & James- 6 BOLTON, daughters in-law and son in-law, which ties in with the 1849 marriage to Widow Sarah Bolton.
The death of George in 1877 in Birmingham may still be my George as the 1881 Census has Sarah - 63 -Widow living with George H Doley & Elizabeth and children at Ellis St, Warrington. George H and family are then on the "Stirlingshire" bound for South Australia on 8/07/1881 . One would suggest that Sarah Sn. was with them.
Just need to confirm date my George's death.

Wondering if anyone has confirmed Sarah Doley's arrival in Australia. I have found a possible arrival on the 27th of June 1881 on the "Cuzco". http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/197756799?searchTerm=%22doley%22&searchLimits=l-state=South+Australia|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188|||l-year=1881|||l-month=6 (http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/197756799?searchTerm=%22doley%22&searchLimits=l-state=South+Australia|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188|||l-year=1881|||l-month=6)
I am also wondering what people's thoughts are on the marriage for George and Sarah Doley. I have seen some consider Sarah to be Sarah Meir. A marriage can be found in 1842 for a George Dooley and Sarah Meir in the registration district of Congleton in Chesire. However, this couple are found in the 1871 census in Tunstall, Staffordshire. They are residing with Sarah's parents, Thomas and Hannah Meir. The occupation for George is not a match, and Sarah's place of birth also differs. I have also ruled out the Sarah Bolton/George Doley marriage.
I am currently considering a possible marriage in 1839 in West Bromwich. Free BMD has George Doley and Sarah Collins listed on the same page (Vol 18 Page 704). However I have not yet found more information on this. There are a few Sarah Collins born in Birmingham in the right time period for this.

The birth certificate of any of George and Sarah's children born after Sep 1837 will show her maiden surname.
I would get two, the youngest and oldest child to make sure she is the mother of all George's children.
