Kirkby Stephen is the nearest market town with a church for Mallerstang people. Have you looked there? There is a local historical society who may be able to help too.

Hi,
Do you have Margaret's will? According to information in Richard Fothergill's "The Fothergills - A First History" she asked Rowland Fothergill (d. 1699) and William Birbeck to look after her son John. There is a bit more about Margaret in this volume so let me know if you haven't got it and I will PM you.
I can't find references to your John or James but there are some Johns about the time whose trees are given and so might be helpful in doing eliminations. Again let me know if this would be helpful.

hi brie
no i don't have margarets will but i do have richard fothergills first history .
margarets son john may be james father but the will refers to him as baby john in 1689 so i assume that he wouldn't be old enough to be james's father. It would be interesting to know if any fothergills were farming at deepgill between 1689 and the 1730's when james was there.
james wife's family were connected with quakerism as were the birkbecks so that probably also adds to the confusion and lack of records.
i wonder if william birkbeck had a will and if john was mentioned in that

Hi Fellsman.
Would this be the same James who married Mary Parkin. If so these are my wifes ancestors. We havent had any luck finding his parents either, but John Fothergill and Isabella Rudd look the most likely to me.

HI:
If you are still looking, I have James Fothergill's parents as john Fothergill and Isabel Rudd at Deepgill, Westmorland. His grandparents were John Fothergill and Jane Birkbeck --also at Deepgill. This is supported by the Kirkby Stephen P/R. This is a connection that Richard Fothergill hadn't made to my Birk Rigg-A family that he described in volume 2. The framework that he provided for the Deppgill families is a bit sketchy, but it connects.

Hi:
You added a few details to what I had on Isabell Rudd's parents --thanks.
The reference to John Fothergill of Nateby doesn't seem to match any of the Nateby lin in Richard Fothergill's second book. Had you anticipated that this John was related to James Fothergill born in 1699/1700 ? Based on residence at Deepgill, I assumed that John Fothergill and jane Birkbeck were james' grandparents. That Jane was born in 1636 and is not the jane that died in 1726 @ 70.
The Jane Fothergill who died at Birk Rigg during the stay of Jno Fothergill (Birkrigg-b) has caught my attention previously. She died before James Fothergill and Mary Parkin arrived at Birkrigg.

Does anybody know who the Widow Fothergill was that is mentioned in the hearth tax returns at Preston Patrick in 1674 living in a property belonging Thomas Sill .
In William Birkbecks will from 1698 a debt of 10 pounds was to be payed to a William Story who i believe may have been a quaker from Preston patrick which I found on the www.storeysofold website thomas sill was mentioned in the wills of several families of storey in the preston patrick area along with several high profile early quakers.
James Fothergill 1700 's granddaughter isabel fothergill married a Thomas Storey in 1799 and lived at Thrang House ,Mallerstang 'was this storey related to william storey mentioned in the will in 1698.

Hello, my ancestors are from the gravesnd fothergills my gg grandma was sarah fothergill born 1799. Some very clever family members have traced back to 1650 with a marke fothergill , we think marke may have been descended from the Ravenstone fothergills. I'm trying to find the first and second books on the fothergills to see if there is any mention of a marke , Anthony or Richard .
I had an email this morning and attached was a copy of a will 1733 of Anthony fothergill who it appears mentions property in Ravenstone , this is very exciting we have a lead back to yorkshire .
Any information would be very much appreciated

The Isabel Fothergill who married Christopher Harker in 1760 (1 May) was actually the daughter of Robert, not Philip, Fothergill. She was baptised 22 April 1736, in Kirkby Stephen (as was her husband, on 16 Feb. 1736). It is hardly surprising, then, that two of their sons were baptised Robert.
Confirmation can be found in the academic paper "Appleby Goal, Onion Flatt (Waitby) and Robert Fothergill (1693-1779)" by Blake Tyson, in the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society (2003) 3rd series, Vol. 3: 139-156. This wonderful paper mentions Fothergill's relationship to both Isabel and her husband, Christopher Harker, and some aspects of their life. Unfortunately, the best online link currently (1 June 2014) available seems to be http://books.google.ca/books?id=5JZnAAAAMAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=Isabel+ .

It would be worth looking on CASCAT for documents relating to the Fothergill family - the site is down at the moment (am Sunday).
There is a huge number of early Fothergill wills (Wills proved in the consistory court of Carlisle 1661-1750). Too many to mention here but the following mentioning Deepgill
Futhergill Margt, Kirkby Stephen (Mallerstang, Deepgill) [We] 1689 W
John Fothergill, Kirkby Stephen (Mallerstang, Deepgill) [We] 1661 W [24]
John, Kirkby Stephen (Mallerstang) [We] 1740 AI [66r]
The only James:
Jas Fothergill, Ravenstonedale (Brownber) [We] 1729 WI Rav
